Back in the mid 90s on the Art BA in Newcastle I started doing cut and paste experiments using a now antiquated Apple Mac. With no-one who knew how the thing worked, I ended up cutting up bits of found footage from TV adverts, hand drawing frame by frame animations on tracing paper stuck to TV sets and the like, and spending a lot of time scratching my head as my computer crashed again and again and again.
I became obsessed with the idea of synaesthesia, or in this case that each sound had a visual equivalent. Heavily involved in the free party scene at the time, I started trying to put those ideas into practice using what I had at my disposal.
The end result might be a bit rough around the edges, but I still like the politics of appropriating copyrighted material and subverting the use of what was originally designed to sell, something that echoes the (sorely missed) DIY political stance of the free party rave culture of that period. Apologies, therefore, to Ritchie Hawtin for using his music (just get in touch and I'll take it down right away if you object!) and thanks to my great friend environmentalist and activist Oly Style for the music he invented for the piece.
