FIRST THINGS FIRST: i regret that the audio is out of sync, especially during the last part. i will fix that soon and post a better version.

this is a video for eduardo molinari's exhibition "Auf den Spuren der Maismanner" at weltecho - chemnitz.
it is based on a performance by eduardo which took place in the inner city of chemnitz shortly before christmas. eduardo dresses up as the 'maize-man' (or corn-man) and sets off on a walk through chemnitz in order to create a 'quipu' in front of the oversized Karl-Marx-Monument. on his way, he hands out flyers for his upcoming exhibition.
the maize-man as well as the quipu originally come from pre-columbian south america. the corn-man is a symbol for life, as most pre-columbian creation myths (e.g.: the mayan 'popol vuh') tell a story about how people were literally created out of corn. the quipu on the other hand is an ancient medium to store information, just like modern Excel documents on the computer. both symbols are taken out of context. hence, they are to be understood metaphorically as a connecting motif between south america and chemnitz.
comment:
- the video was mostly filmed 'on the spot' following eduardo through chemnitz. only very few scenes were properly arranged and set.
