It was tons of fun making this video.

I used my brother in this (he was willing to hop into a onesie!)

The original footage was shot in 720p/24 HD on a Panasonic HVX 200.

The canvas was built in.. believe it or not... Comic Life which used to come free on Apple computers... and then it was exported to AfterEffects.

The video footage was taken in, edited in Final Cut Pro, and then sent to Photoshop CS3 Extended and the filters and color adjustments were applied there (this new feature of Photoshop might be more powerful than I realized. You can essentially do everything you can to stills, to video.) It was then sent into AE for the animation.

The song, "Holding Out For A Hero" made me laugh while I was editing.

Apps used: Final Cut Pro, Comic Life, Photoshop, AfterEffects, Garageband.

This is great, Chris. Way to use your resources in unintended ways! Can't wait for the live showing tomorrow. Was the grocery store lady a real hero moment or did you know her?

man this is amazing, i love working with i life and i always was wondering if this could be done, so now that i see it,. is really great,. you had to export your video in still images to make it work on comic life then export again after the cool effect in images or video to final cut,. or wait,.!! the cartoon look you did it in comic life or photoshop CS3 ?

very nice you just open my eyes to try something ..!!
    thanks for sharing,.....!!!

Hey. Glad you liked it. I used Comic Life to make the comic book frames that all the videos played in. I used Photoshop CS3 extended (the extended version supports video) and made that comic book look then exported the video to a quicktime movie to put back into After Effects and built the final sequence.

I knew the idea I was looking for and I knew the new Photoshop supported video but I had to scour google and various forums before discovering how to actually make the effect work on video.

"Heroes water things" Oh my dear lord how I laughed!

I just knew this was going to be good when I pressed "Play". And damn it was.

I was kinda hoping that you had made a music video for Stephen Lynchs "Superhero". Perhaps next time? :P

Hey Chris, love your stuff. Got a question though about color correcting in photoshop. I'm having trouble correcting more than one frame at a time. How are you applying the filters? Do you flatten to layers?
  • Chris Crutchfield 1 year ago
I don't flatten the layers... I'd have to get back to my computer to remember the exact order in which I did it.. BUT i think you just import the video, select the layer, and then go to Layer > convert for smart filters and then when you apply any of the standard filters to any one frame, it duplicates it for all frames. Then, in order to add saturation and other effects you have to add a new adjustment layer and link the video layer to the adjustment layer (make a separate one for each change - ie hue/sat or curves or contrast etc).

From there you can go and use the selection tool and replaces parts of backgrounds or paint over any part of the video that remains still - example: in the scene where the superhero runs L to R across the frame, the sky has a nice smooth blue gradient - that was just an altogether separate layer with a gradient overlay on it, not how the actual sky looked when we shot that day.

    Hope that all makes sense.

Fabulous stuff. There is a filter in FCP 6 that lets apply a similar color affect the results are not nearly as good as yours, but it is good for a quick cartoon effect. In Effects under Video Filters, Stylize, Vectorize Color.
