"The estimated death rate from diseases of the respiratory system for Indigenous infants was more than 23 times higher than that of non-Indigenous infants according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics in 2008. The incidence indigenous infant deaths as a result of respiratory issues in Australia can be decreased provided infant CPR training is widely disseminated into the indigenous population. Traditional instruct-led courses are not feasible as applied method as these courses are cost intensive and time challenging.
Pregnant indigenous women in rural/remote communities will receive a Laerdal 'Mini Baby self directed CPR kit' through localised health education programs/services.
