22. Downhill Mt. Biking at Attitash - HDTV
1 year ago
Direct link to this HD Quicktime video on my webpage: tomguilmette.com/Site/EX1_Letus_Videos/Pages/attitashmtb720_hi.html

This is a short film I shot and edited for Attitash Mountain in Bartlett, New Hampshire.

The idea was to create a film for attitash.com to let other mountain bikers (or people who want to try the sport) know that Attitash has some great lift service downhill mountain biking.

I shot this three days ago and mounted a Sony HC3 HDV camera to a Bogen magic arm and clamped the contraption to my Iron Horse Sunday downhill bike. I rode down the trails that we were going to showcase in the film.

I joined up with six local riders from the Bartlett, NH area and I shot the Holy Chute trail from start to finish with the guys. I used my Sony PMW-EX1 with the Letus, a Vinten Vision 3 tripod, and a bag of assorted 35mm lenses. I shot the entire film in 720p 24p.

TRT 4min 25sec

Tom, excellent footage! Very nice film short. It looks like the Bogen MagicArm worked out great. Very stable shots.

Very nice, I love the interview shots, vibrant colors, good dof nice framing, good camera work.
Also the zoom action shots were very sweet.

Only it is very noticeable that the flash video codec is not amused by all the sudden movements and it gets blocky and low bit-ratey a lot of times.

I must say this is the most polished piece of work that I have seen from you. Only minor comment, it might be a bit on the long side near the end.

I prefer a lot tighter shot when filming riding as it sets the adrenalin more and you become emerged in it more as its a high action sport.

not sure if i liked the cam mount, seems to be done a lot in mtb amatures but it did look sweet on the lift.

brave man strapping your camera to the bike!

ridings fun :D i filmed a documentary on a dher who did a 30foot drop and smashed his spine and now rides with 1 arm, some rushes on my profile in pap quality.

tight is good, but i am shooting with a letus 35mm adapter in low light and my depth of field is as thin as a blade of grass. in this case, wider was easier!

good riding/editing, but you can tell most of the clips are sped-up hahaha
  • Tom Guilmette plus 1 year ago
yea all of the riding shots are. 10 percent to 30 percent.

anyone who rides downhill mountain bikes can tell, but it speeds things up and paces the film well.

Lots of fun to watch. At age 59, I'll never be doing it, so it's a vicarious pleasure. I liked the timing of the piece and would enjoy seeing a longer short.

Great vid as usual. Glad to know that the footage was sped up a bit because if I tried to go down that mountain that fast I'd be dead by now!

Definitely would want a bike with full suspension before I'd try that.

did you use wireless lavaliers on your video. I think I saw one lavalier sticking out of one guy being interviewed. Loved the audio.

Great footage. I miss more wide angle shots. Since you have a 35mm adapter, using a 18mm lens should not be a problem. Also, the onboard camera shot is too tight (I want to see more bike), but that's because the HC3 isn't wide enough. One more thing, you said that all was shotted in 720/24p, why? I mean, for sports it would be better to shot 720/60p and do that fluid slow motion ramps. And as somebody else said, more tight shots, details of the bike, close shots of the bikers face...and so on. But hey, fantastic video and awesome picture quality...love those out of focus backgrounds!

  • sweet, but too bad you sped up some of the filming to make the riders look faster. You can see the speed at which the wheels fall into ruts. E.g. at 2.58, you can obviously see the speed up. It doesnt seem a stylistic choice, because its not that noticeable. Nice filming though!

hey there, this video would have been really great, congratulations BUT you made it kind of ridiculous by speeding things up in a lot of shots. Please, please, don't do that any more! It kind of ruins the whole work.
(what you could do more is slo-mo stuff)
