Watching three monarch caterpillars over the Fourth of July holiday for my son's day camp. The largest one dropped into J formation yesterday evening around 5pm. Today at approximately 8:45am he formed a chrysalis.

I recorded this one with iStopMotion on my Mac at 30fps taking a picture every 20 seconds. The formation of the chrysalis was very quick. For the next one I think I will record it at a picture every 5 seconds or maybe even every second. It's just difficult to determine when the little fellas are going to work their magic.

WHOA. This made me gasp out loud. I would love to actually see it slowed down a little bit!

Also, is there a way to know when they'll break out? that would be cool to capture too if you still have them around.

    Miraculous isn't it?

break out = 5 days to 2 weeks

Two more caterpillars to get better footage. Next one is ready to go into J formation now:

That looks really strange! I never knew what it looked like, so I've learned something new again today. :)

Dude, that was great! I've never seen that either...just the before and after shots.

    Thanks AJ!

Thats awesome. Can you slow down the frames between :16 and :18 and post it?

I shot this one at one frame every 20 seconds so I can't show you what I don't have. There just aren't enough frames.

The next one was shot at a frame every 3 seconds: vimeo.com/1280489
It is slower for sure. I've got one more pillar who'll be ready to go tomorrow I think. I plan on recording him in real-time since the whole thing takes all of 3 minutes.

Awesome. I've never seen it change. I've played it several times trying to see how it happens. But alas, it's too fast for me. Score another one for mother nature.

    thanks.
