So, we heard all about a new camera system that has been used for great artistic films and even network shows. Well we had to give it a try. In addition, we knew Avid was coming out with it's upgrade and want to test out the direct import of canon digital slr files.
So, we committed to doing an off the wall test to try this gear out. We sat around and brainstormed some ideas and thought a horror theme would give us the best content to test the things we wanted to. Here's what we did. We took the Canon 7D, a bunch of L lenses, got a small crew together, and shot overnight. What this enabled us to do was test the low light capabilities of the camera, the image quality of the camera, will the native format hold up to broadcast work, and can this DSLR really pull off imagery comparable to the high end camera.
After brining the footage back to our studio, to say we were a little bit surprised would be an understatement. This camera captured amazing imagery at fairly low light levels.
We're glad we took the chance with this camera on this project. We're not sure if we would have suggested this to a client before seeing the capabilities.
We would consider this a rough cut, with a rough audio track, but wanted to share the results. We did color correct the footage to fit the feel we were going for, but the original color that was captured was pretty amazing and could work too, really just a preference thing.
