This documentary explores the lives of eleven women who live in La Carpio, a slum located outside San Jose, Costa Rica. During my ten-month Fulbright grant, I witnessed how Gail Nystrom, the director of the Costa Rican Humanitarian Foundation, gave these women and their community a strength and power they did not know, in a place where the government is noticeably absent. I listened, learned, filmed and gave each woman a camera to photograph her daily life. Throughout the documentary, the women's photographs illustrate their very personal narratives.
