70. Lightning strikes three of the tallest buildings i…
1 year ago
On June 23rd, 2010 a line of nasty storms rolled through Chicago in the early evening hours. I stayed late at the office that night to work on some things and to avoid the rush hour chaos that was going on. Once I returned home I wasn't really paying attention to what was happening outside until someone asked me if I was watching the lightning. I took a quick look out my window and saw some quick hits of lightning and ran back to my room to grab my camera and tripod. I was standing out there randomly hitting the record button and hoping I would catch some of the strikes. About 15 minutes in nothing was happening during my current recording so I reached to stop it and start a new one. At the moment I touched the camera three of the tallest buildings in Chicago were struck by lightning at the same time. Willis Tower (Tallest), Trump International Hotel and Tower (2nd Tallest) and the John Hancock Building(4th tallest). If you listen closely, you can hear me lightly say "yes!" after the triple strike happens.

**** 6/27 - Posted the sequel with more strikes from this storm! vimeo.com/12905965 ***
HD Video was shot on a Canon EOS 7D. Video was edited with Sony Vegas Movie Studio.

    Amazing, beautiful capture.

And yes, it's an excellent vantage point and the perfect balcony view--I often like to take photos from one of the foot bridges over the Ashland Green Line station, which has a similar view.

Hey that's great! What equipment did you use to get this footage?
  • Craig Shimala plus 1 year ago
I used a Canon 7D with a 10-22mm wide angle lens. I had it in running in video mode in hopes of catching something.

I had no idea lightning faded in and out like that in slow motion...I thought it grew and branched, like fireworks? Very cool!

    such a beauty!
  •
  • Totally mindblowing. I can only imagine how crazy it must have been to see that in real life.
And it's way cool how you've synced it with Sufjan Stevens, but shouldn't it have been "The Seer's tower" :)
From what I understand he (Sufjan) is referring to the Sears Tower.
  • Craig Shimala plus 1 year ago
I was torn between four songs off his Illinois album. Sears seemed fitting but it was a little too busy.
  • Jesse Stein 1 year ago
I knew that melody was familiar. Figures it would be Sufjan. :P

    This is so unreal :)
  •
  • I have shot some cool lighting shots myself over the years, and it is always such a FUN surprise to see what the camera captured when you first look at the images! Wow, that is a super great shot with the skyline, the clouds and then to have a great ball of fire hit 3 key buildings at the same time... man, ring the bell! ! And to have it on digital motion with the ability to slow it down like that is extra Über Cool! That has got to be a rare event you captured! Seriously, Craig, register the copyright for your work right away and see if the Chicago Science museum would buy some rights to use the film and also take it to a few stock agencies and see if they are interested in acting as your agent for it. I think you could make some money with this over time. It will help pay for your next lens and camera! I hope you have even more good luck with this amazing capture of mother nature in action! I am a member of ASMP and they have very good information on how and why you should copyright your work. See: asmp.org/content/registration-counts

He said "three OF the tallest", not "the three tallest".

    Nice video :)
  • Dane Kantner 1 year ago
see i deleted my last comment because you're right... they are "three of" the tallest ... then the local media just showed this saying "the three tallest" .. doh

fantastic video. that is a great shot!
    That was a crazy storm.

what kind of settings were you using? I haven't had such great luck shooting lightning with the 7D. I get a lot of rolling shutter.
  • Craig Shimala plus 1 year ago
I actually can't recall. I was shooting in both manual and auto mode. This may have been one of the auto shots. I wish the camera would tag the settings in the video file to revisit later.
  • Sinan İpek 1 year ago
Actually, you can retrieve that information from the .THM file on your card. Just change the .THM extension to .JPG (after you send it on the desktop, of course) and right click on the file so that the properties dialog appears. Here is all the information you need for this:
    vimeo.com/12719005
We are waiting for the information, Craig.
  • Craig Shimala plus 1 year ago
Ahhh, I knew those had to have some meaning. I no longer have the THM for this clip. I looked at another clip from that night off another card and it doesn't give any of the info we're looking for. No F-stop or exposure. ISO is listed as 0. Strange. I'll have to dig deeper.
  • Sinan İpek 1 year ago
You're right. Today, I realised same thing, too. No useful information there.

I think is made in post, no lighting flickering in the lights of the buildings, and it seams it was made with HDRI multiple expousures. Tell me if it is real or it's not, even so, impressive work, I really like it.
