Went for something a bit more relaxed and atmospheric this time... late night edit.

Shot in Tokyo on 5D and 5D mk2, same workflow as for the previous videos.

Music: R-Gent by Sun Electric from the album "Kitchen" (R&S Records).

Paul Frankland aka Woob kindly interviewed me on his blog here: season9.wordpress.com/2010/08/06/floating-point-an-interview-with-samuel-cockedey/

Really impressive and compelling work, Sam. I especially liked the opening sequence and the long pan sequence.
Was that a Milapse rig? Very nice day-to-night transitions as well...
  • Samuel Cockedey 1 year ago
Thanks Edvard, glad you like it! It is a Mumford moco, still learning how to use it though... more panning shots coming soon!

GREAT job. love to know how you got the timelapse exposure right as day turned to night without getting any flickr.

Aperture priority, filtering in post, experience ;-)

Wow. Like a modern Koyaanisqatsi. Only in Tokyo.

The herky-jerky motion of the cranes atop the building late in the sequence reminded me of the way an iguana's eyes move that same way ... abruptly, independently of each other, and yet somewhat coordinated.

Great stuff. Hypnotic. Makes me want to do something similar (dammit!).
  • Samuel Cockedey 1 year ago
Thanks a lot Dave, that slow and hypnotic effect is what I was going for. Maybe not everyone's cup of tea but time lapses are already fast enough as they are, and I wanted something a bit different - a visual equivalent to ambient music of sorts. Not sure I deserve the Ron Fricke comparison! His work is all the more amazing to me that he was not shooting digital at the time.

Nice work, Samuel. I personally liked the day shots with minimal ground activity(moving vehicles) cos it seems to give the best hypnotic effect for me. Love the composition choices and the cranes too.

    Keep up the great work!

    just beautiful.
Feel ahamed to be a photographer living in Tokyo and never to have produced anything this beautiful.
  • Samuel Cockedey 1 year ago
We all have a different vision of the city Adrian, that is what makes works like yours equally interesting.

You can see the experience, beautiful job! Is there some sort of agency you go through to get access to the places you photographed from or was that careful planning? You picked some great angles of tokyo.
  • Samuel Cockedey 1 year ago
Thank you. I've been living in Tokyo for 10 years and love exploring so I know the place pretty well.

    Wow.
The transitions between day + night are first class Samuel well done.

Alot of patience in getting this piece together?

Also could you please share with us what type of post filter you use to treat the flicker? It works magically!

Beautiful work Samuel. It's funny cause I'm sort of exploring the same theme of time lapse with my own work, but I only have a low grade Lumix to do the job, and I can only film bits of 15 minutes.... Check it out if you have the time and tell me what you think, be kind cause this is my first one.....

Super imagery and wonderfully chosen music. This and your other videos remind me of electronic circuit boards - one knows that each little bit does something, there are the networks and connections, the blinking lights, the mysterious mechanical parts but the gigantic complexity overwhelms and the fascination is in the abstract beauty. Bravo.
  • Samuel Cockedey 1 year ago

I dont know why but i always watch this video i feel like alone may be by the music and the images, specially the shot of Toshima with the violet sky.

This is the the most impressive city timelapse I've ever seen.

How are you adjusting your exposure so seamlessly from day to night transitions? Is your intervalometer adjusting any settings other than triggering the shutter?

    just wow

    Great video, well done.
I also live in Tokyo and I'm trying to do something similar. Were many of the places you shot from public places? If so, how did you deal with the shutter sound? The repetitive sound could be quite disturbing to people.
