In 2003 the Hawai‘i Capital Cultural Coalition (HCCC) established the Hawai‘i Capital Cultural District located in the area between Kalihi and Pi‘ikoi Streets, and Beretania Street and the Pacific Ocean. HCCC is currently taking steps to achieve designation as a National Heritage Area. HCCC is pushing for National Heritage Area designation for the ahupua‘a covering downtown Honolulu, Nu`uanu Valley, and adjacent areas. HCC Outreach Coordinator Dr. Trisha Kehaulani Watson
Opponents object to being cut out of the process and/or the federal land grab. They include Kahealani Keahi, of the Kalawahine Hawaiian Homestead and the President of Hui Maka‘ainana a Kalawahine; Tamar DeFries, a Papakolea resident; and Chinatown business owner Lee Stack.
