What are those parts, Where can I get them and how much do they cost?
  • KFLeung 1 year ago
Total cost about US $70. In Hong Kong all can be easily found in those shops selling camera accessories.
  • Stefano Dooijes 1 year ago
Hmm, allright. Thanks for the info, I'll make one when my budget is a little bigger ^^.
    Real good job though!
As Viperos said, would love to see some shots from it.

wooow great stuff. Waiting for some shots from it.

    hey that looks cool!

would love to know what the parts are :)
  • KFLeung 1 year ago
All parts can be found in those shop selling camera accessories in Hong Kong. All are made in China therefore quite cheap.

    1. The most important stuff, the "U-shaped foldable bracket" - US $30
    2. Tripod top plate for ease of fixing and detaching the camera - US $40
    3. Mini tripod with swivel ball head as the gimble- US $10
    4. Flat bar for holding and adjusting the counter weight by balancing at different length and angle - US $10
    5. Counter weight - US $5

Thank you for sharing a very well made video showing how simple a 7.99 min tripod can be subbed as a Gimble the Other parts were interesting as well.

  • Joe Moya plus 1 year ago
It appears that when you opened the LCD viewing screen, the camera did not balance (or level) on the horizon. By that I mean, it looks a bit out of level relative to the horizon.

    Is this correct?
  • KFLeung 1 year ago
Balancing problem can be fixed by adjusting the bottom silver counterweight, either left & right, or up & down. The counterweight is screw-fixed and can be shifted easily.
  •
  • Joe Moya plus 1 year ago
Thanks... I see now where you can shift the bottom weight...

Curious... How much does it weigh without the counter weight?
  • KFLeung 1 year ago
The camera weighs about 2 lb. The stabilizing bracket weighs also 2 lb. The stainless steel counterweight is about 0.5 lb.
  •
  • Heath Cozens plus 1 year ago
This is great! Really clear. Would you have any suggestions on adpating this for a heavier camera like the PD 150 (over 10 pounds)?
  • KFLeung 1 year ago
I try Canon A1 which is about 7 lb. The counterweight needed to be increased to 5 lb for good balancing, but my hand can't withstand more than 5 minutes. So I suggest reasonable weight for hand held stabilizer is the one similar to HC1 of so. Otherwise vest support seems necessary.
  •
  • Heath Cozens plus 1 year ago
Thanks, Leung laoshi.. I'll try this one day soon, with my heavier camera, and I'll post the results up here when I do.

  • KFLeung 1 year ago

    Good work...!!
But I searched 2 hours, and I didn't find any product.
No bracket like yours, and for the mini tripod, I don't know if each pod unscrew as yours.
    take a look:

    Mini Tripod:
    bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=213133&is=REG

    Mini Tripod:
    bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=workaround.jsp&A=details&Q=&sku=278496&is=REG

    Bracket:

    Thanks to help me.

    Hi Stephen,
Tripod screw threads are universal. B&H's ones look OK though a bit expansive. All stuff I didn't collect from the Internet, instead sourced from the cheap cheap China originated camera shop. The most important trick of the black bracket is the two the angle-adjustable arms. The golden one from B&H seems not OK.
  •
  • stephen greg 1 year ago
    Hi,
    Thanks to answer...
Ok for tripods, I think I"ll choose the one who is the lightest.
For the adjustable bracket, humm, I didn't find...I'm searching...
If you have some internet address...lol
  • KFLeung 1 year ago
    Hi Stephen,

I don't think the bracket can be found on Internet. It is just some kind of local cheap stuff manufactured in China.
  • Nicely done and the results look good, too.

For the bracket, you can find them on ebay. This auction may be over by the time you're reading this: cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200241960490 so try searching ebay for "Adjustable Pivot flash bracket" to bring up one like this one. Other searches may have similar results.

Toucanlam on the HV20 forum found most of the parts: hv20.com/showthread.php?t=14301

  • KFLeung 1 year ago
I think it works fine to small DV. $99.99 is a bit high. I prefer my DIY steadicam. It can even work with Canon A1 (6 lb) although it is too heavy to hand-held long time.
  •
  • stephen greg 1 year ago
Ok, it's so difficult to use steady for the first time?
  • KFLeung 1 year ago
Not at all. Not difficult even for the first time. Of course more practice would be better.

  •
  • Andy Tanguay 1 year ago
Where does a weight like that come from? I would guess I can find a way to add some weight on the end, but I like the nice clean look of your weight.

    Thanks...great idea!!
  • KFLeung 1 year ago
The silver stuff is a kind of door handle. You may find it from ironmongery shop selling door lock and hinge.

    KFleung大哥,我是大陆的,请问那个支架是不是这个:auction1.taobao.com/auction/item_detail-0db2-4df850e0f1af9da5a7bfc4f81c9ca86c.jhtml,
  • KFLeung 1 year ago
  • Luke 1 year ago
  • KFLeung 1 year ago

    ironmongery.com/fur-d-line.html
  • Luke 1 year ago
  • KFLeung 1 year ago
  • KFLeung 1 year ago
  • Luke 1 year ago

Nice solution. I will see if I can get some parts together but one big thing. Since I have seen this video the song is in my Brain and even a couple of beer can not make it disappear. How is the name, it sound familiar, a little bit like Miss Marpel.....

Thanks for the demo. At a friendly shop I tried out the Manfrotto Modosteady with my Sony HC-3. Same principle as yours, but ready made, and of course a more expensive (Around 120 euro). Not entirely convinced, but your demo helps at finding the right angle. I was not impressed by the swivel ball of the Manfrotto, did not look so smooth. Did you try it as well?
  • KFLeung 1 year ago
I have never tried Modosteady before. I only saw it on the internet. It is a bit expansive. I think it suits small machine only, may be at most HC-3.

    Hi, KFLeung !

    from your Part List
" 2. Tripod top plate for ease of fixing and detaching
    the camera - US $40 "

Is all kinds of plate available?
I found the same one as yours, it doesn't include a quick-shoe. plate + quick shoe = about $65. terrible!!

more cheaper one is OK, if the size is similar?

    thanks
  • KFLeung 1 year ago
Quick release base and plate are optional. The purpose is to provide convenience mounting to the bracket, of course it still works fine without these, or smaller size can do the same.
  • Kimhwan 1 year ago
    Thanks, KFLeung.

finally i just ordered that U-shape bracket from HK.
gonna buy the rest of materials.

Where did you find "Counter Weight" of that kind?
    What's that for originally?

    thanks
  • KFLeung 1 year ago
Hardware shop selling ironmongeries. The counter weight is some kind of metal stud for fixing up advertising panels.
  • Kimhwan 1 year ago
    oh. i see.
today i found the similar one at my shower room. the handle of a glass door :)
    I'll buy it.

    thanks
  •
  • Kimhwan 1 year ago
I got it from HK today.
    question.
did you make a hole in the plastic screw to connect the minipod to the plate(or camcorder)? 0:28~0:29

My one has no hole. did you make it yourself?
  • KFLeung 1 year ago
No need to drill. There has a screw hole in some kind, but you have to find it. Instead you can fix the mini tripod to the black u-bracket side arm. It works even better.
  • Kimhwan 1 year ago
Could u let me know where the screw hole is exactly?-.
yes, a side arm is nice to connect. but I hope to make like yours...
  • KFLeung 1 year ago
If you are still in HK, you may try to find it from Apliu Street at Shamshuipo MTR Station. A shop named "Ying Kee" has it.
  • Kimhwan 1 year ago
ah.. I'm not in HK. just ordered this bracket through ebay. well.. what's its name.. and what device for?
thank u for answering on and on. :-)

Hey i must say thank you for this DIY idea! appreciate for sharing!
I just ordered my flash bracket and am excited to try to build one these and see how it works. Unluckily i didnt know about this while i was in HK but i did find the opteka flash bracket on amazon for anyone who is having trouble trying to find the dual pivot bracket

(i assume this bracket will work right?)

I ordered the parts for this and I can't wait to put it together. One piece I am missing is the rectangular slotted counter-weight extension piece. What is that?
  • KFLeung 11 months ago
    Hi Mark,
Nothing special about this extension piece, just a flat bar of any metal, aluminum, steel or whatever you have got on hand. The main thing is the slot and/ or screw thread for connecting the U-bracket and counter weight. If you havn't got any similar, please try any wooden stick, metal ruler...... or to explore your imagination as you normally did as I can review from your video.

wonderful!!! I have a question for you. In the video, just before you put on the wide lens, it seems that you moved the tripod to the middle part of the bracket. Is that correct?
    Thank you.
  • KFLeung 7 months ago
You are right. I moved the gimbal (tripod) to the upper thread of the middle arm of the bracket. It works better for heavier loads.
  •
  • 4Τ7 7 months ago
Thanks for the answer...I am waiting th u bracket to arrive and i purchased a mini tripod with a gimbal. Please tell me that the counter weight makes the camera to be steady, because I tried to balance a small mini dv camera on the tripod itself and its impossible!!! I guess its the counterweight that makes the gimbal not to go crazy....
  • KFLeung 7 months ago
Counter weight is the balancing device of the whole setup. By adjusting with different weight, angle and length, it is nearly suitable for any DV ranging from 0.5kg - 2.0kg. If you got a bracket and tripod (gimbal), just try to stick something on hand as the counterweight that weigh about 0.5kg.

I wish you success. Please try.

For the quick release would I need a medium or large plate for my Nikon D90?

    Which mini tripod could work?
    amazon.com/s/qid=1242052726/ref=sr_pg_1?ie=UTF8&rs=&keywords=ball%20head%20mini%20tripod&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Aball%20head%20mini%20tripod&page=1

And where can I get the flat bar?

Hope you can help me, thanks!
  • KFLeung 7 months ago
Quick release plate is optional and is just for mounting convenience, still working fine without it. If you really want that, medium is enough for D90.

I think the Kodar 5.75" is good enough.

I don't have any source from ebay or something in Internet for the flat bar. You may DIY by using any long and rigid strip, such as metal/ plastic ruler.

I bought it from shop rather than on Internet. Instead you can fix the tripod to the bracket arm but not the quick release plate.

Since u ve been an inspiration to many vimeo users with your flash bracket steady, I ll post here a further option of this flash bracket. If you mount your camera (with your 35mm adapter on) upside down you eliminate the flip problem ....That is you mount the camera in the position kf leung puts the tripod.

A lot of confusion went toward the counterweight KFLeung was using. Just sharing what I found here. It turns out it's not a door handle or stub. It is called a standoff here for mirrors or acrylic boards.
    sgawinc.com/c-r-laurence-products/standoff-bases/standoff-bases-3/4-inch-diameter/brass-standoff-base-3/4-inch-diameter-by-e-1-1/2-inch-long-crl-s0b34112br/prod_11112.html
You'll need to get a cap and a base to complete the standoff set.
I was hoping to find this in my local home depot but so far no luck. However, looking at the price on the website perhaps using a peg from walmart is not such a bad idea. :-(.

search for standoff when you hit this link...much cheaper
