----------
Overview:

This video is a teaser for a collaboration between Philip Bloom and Deltree, The first film ever to be shot on an iPhone. Brilliantly shot using the latest technology, the film will showcase revolution of HD film-making with the Apple iPhone 4.

Couple of technical notes:
Rig was a quick pass at mounting- this is not the final rig. We mounted it onto a redrock mattebox. Not for the looks but because it was the best way we could gel/ND the iPhone.

Because we were rushed we had to shoot in broad daylight- not ideal when we cant control shutter/exposure.

For behind the scenes pics: phillip bloom's blog link

Why we are doing this:
Because its going to be done, we went to do it really well. We think it is important to showcase to the world the ongoing revolution of digital film-making techniques.

Not only that, it’s a well written story.

Music is "Tornado" by Jonsi- buy here: tiny.cc/or7r9

Now, by cinematic, do you mean with story and character? Or just a bunch of b-roll?
  • Philip Bloom pro 1 year ago
a combination of everything. not sure what you mean by a bunch of b-roll...the shots above where done by them purely to show how good the footage can look...

Gotcha. Yeah, it looks good. I'm curious to see if an app could extend the abilities of the filming function (i.e. shutter, iso, white balance). Good luck :)
  • Robert Frank 1 year ago
Yes, an app for manual control!
  • Benjamin Reece plus 1 year ago
We are working on it - if it's possible we already have a developer on board

If you have not already, see this ARS article discussing the camera...

    arstechnica.com/apple/news/2010/06/sizing-up-the-iphone-4-for-shutterbugs.ars

Hi, I have a dev shop down hall from Ben and investigating it. So far, I have found that an app would have to built on the top of the camera api's to extend the feature request. With that said, these are private api's. As an iPhone/iPad developer, submitting any application that makes use of private API's will be rejected. The reasoning behind this is that Apple tends to change their API's and an application built could break in the next OS release.

The camera engineering team spent of a ton of time implementing HD, facetime and new API's to handle iMovie. The target audience are consumers, so manual exposure control was probably not high on the list. If even at all. Their focus (no pun intended) is for (tap to focus) autoexposure control to help the consumer.

With that said, I can see the interest among you, so submitting a feature request to their bug system is quite possible. The right engineers will see it, but managers make the ultimate decisions. I will keep investigating it, and see if I can come up ideas...

if it is possible to use the private API's and the app gets rejected, put it on cydia :-)

I'm really excited to see what will come of this. There's some powerful talent behind that little phone so I'm sure we'll be impressed.

And, Chris Cook, the song is Tornado by Jónsi.

This footage turned out really nice, it will be cool if Apple lands up producing an iTripod ;). I’m really excited to see this project developing, I hope it does well. I fully agree, we’re at the point now where soon a lot of people are going to have HD cameras everywhere they go. For myself I notice that having a camera everywhere has got me to take hundreds of more photos than I was before using my regular digital camera. It really fascinates me to visual all the beautiful content that people are going to be able to produce with the iPhone 4. Spontaneous and random events can be really amazing.

I've added this video to my site :)

Good looking footage, especially for a phone. The title says 'cinematic film' though. Adding music to nice footage isn't a film. This is an iPhone 4 video demo.

I was really cynical about the HD capabilities of the iPhone until I started to see footage like this. The auto adjustments you see give away that it is a phone, but still very impressive nonetheless.

Phone or nikon? Cuz most NIkon DSLRs dot he same thing if you dont hold a button, stand on one foot, and dance in circles.

It's extremely nice and well worth watching! Just don't call it a "cinematic film" because a) that doesn't mean anything, and b) it make you look like a poseur.

The colors do look great but have to ask if this is raw footage or if a lot of post cc was done to it, either way its pretty sharp and impressive.

I expect there will be five more before we release.

The point was to release a video (above) to show what we could do with the camera and then to try to get the community involved to make a film happen with Phillip Bloom. With all our schedules the earliest we can shoot is mid July.

The pie is big enough for everyone. So bring em on! :)

But if you want to see a film done really well, with a script, storyline, multiple locations, lighting, etc....

P.S. the train film is awesome.

Its great, and I don't see it as competition, just a different type of execution....
  • Michael Koerbel plus 1 year ago
    Thanks Benjamin.

I too am very interested to see what you guys come up with. Our's was obviously done very quickly, but I've seen Philip's work in the past and I'm really curious to see what you come up with a bit of money, and more time to actually test the camera, etc. There is a ton of footage that was just plain unusable because we were learning the camera as we went.

Very much looking forward to it.

  • Josef Hrehorow 1 year ago
Looks like you've been beaten to it. the whole premise of your pitch is flawed. now what? I'd really like to see it! However, I don't think you can raise money under the notion of it being the "first" when it clearly isn't..

it's unfortunate really but you couldn't really control other people doing it..
  • Benjamin Reece plus 1 year ago
Josef, check out the site...we are actually talking about the other films being made- but we are actually doing something we believe is at another level here.

But, like I said above, we can't control...and that's a good thing! Bring it on!
  • Josef Hrehorow 1 year ago
I'm hoping it all goes well! While I thought the train piece was good I do understand what you mean in terms of "another level." I hope you can reach it!

With all the iphone films coming online you'll be forced to produce something amazing. That must be a great feeling!

With Bloom and other film makers on your side I have no doubt its going to be a success!

I'm keeping an eye on it!

    Hi Guys,

Thanks for doing this experiment but frankly Vincent LaForet's first work with the Canon 5D II was worth getting more excited about. The Canon 5D II doesn't cost that much more than an iPhone these days. Think you should reschedule with a Panasonic GH2 even if Phil has to pay cash for it (he was complaining about no demo units from Panasonic on his weblog).

I am truly grateful for this experiment as it saves time going down the wrong path.

This 'Ongoing revolution of digital film-making techniques' is getting old to me. I feel like we need to step back a bit and just concentrate on the filmmaking itself. All of these 'convenient' cameras (so-called breakthroughs) are just making us all pussies. The creativity hasn't changed much at all considering that the same quality of work has been done since the 70's. Quick and convenient doesn't always produce quality. Hard work and getting back to the craft will give you more substance and satisfaction in the end. I can't see how it's such a great thing to shoot a film on an iphone? Is it really that important? Or is it just a sign the times and our strange devotion to making everything easy. Do we really want owners of iphone 4's plaguing the internet with quick and easy content.
