Twisted Tail on Raptor 90
I wish I could fire my Heli Mechanic, he aint all that bright.. I wish I could fire the guy that does my pre-flights too, he aint that bright either... :-)
Since my last crash I have been flying around with one of my two tail rotors on backwards. In general airfoils don't work very well backwards, especially when they are spinning at 10,000 rpms... :-0
Anway, what happened is the backwards tail rotor was making a TON of drag during fast Piroetts. After enough time it caused a bolt to fail and allowed the whole stinking tail rotor housing to revolve around the tail boom. The net result was I wanted to spin one way, I started spinning the way I wanted and suddenly I started spinning the other way and couldn't stop.
In addition, the twisting of the tail made the tail control system to stop working. So, I was literally spinning out of control.
After realizing my predicament, I turned off the motor, and did my best to set it down gently. All things considered, I got out pretty lucky. The heli bounced once hard, but landed on its skids upright, with the only damage being a servo gear, which I replaced at the field and returned to flight (after putting the tail housing back together.
Now that was FUN!
