Video Summary: I first climbed Mt. Shasta with my dad in 1999 as a preparation trip for climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro; I've been wanting to share the Mt. Shasta experience with others ever since. This video is intended to show prospective climbers what it is like to leave from the Bunny Flat parking lot and climb to the summit via the Avalanche Gulch route.
Please let me know if you have good information or links that I can share here.
Best,

Prev week
We went in late May and the avalanche danger was low according to the ranger station: shastaavalanche.org
I think we went on one of the earlier weekends in the year--that were safe. I wish you the best next year. Happy to help if you have any planning, packing or preparing questions.
Ryan
I bet you summit next summer! Let me know when you do.
Ryan
Best to you in your return to Shasta.
Ryan
Great video. I was one of Troy's climbing partners and was with you there on the summit. Superb job!!!!
Ed
It was fun meeting you and the guys up there. I wish you all the best in your upcoming climbs.
Do you all have a website for your group?
Climb high,
Ryan
Next best thing is a good scree run.
Thanks for the nice comments. See the glissade video made me overjoyed.
Erwin, the summit was on the 24th of May.
Best,
RSC
If you can jog 5 miles, you can definitely do Shasta. The trick is to hike slowly the whole way up. The summit rate is 33% and I think that 80% of the people that attempt the climb would summit if they slowed down on the ascent. The trouble of moving fast results from dehydration and creeping exhaustion. We all feel like we should move fast to the summit and then we over-exert ourselves--trouble kicks in at 13,000 ft.
Here is how I'd recommend preparing:
* Find a person who has climbed the mountain before and get them to go with you
* Camp on snow once so you know how it feels
* Get to the point where you can hike 10 miles/day two days in a row
It really is a fun experience and not out of the realm of possibility for most fit people. Facebook me if you want more detailed help for planning. I'm happy to help.
