In 1916 Louis Ferdinand Céline managed a rubber plantation buried in the jungle of Cameroon. He wrote his first novel there, upon which Journey to the End of the Night is based. The heroine, a contemporary Bardamu assumed to be the writer’s granddaughter, returns to Africa to trace her grandfather’s footsteps.
