DOF Test Shots with Canon HV30
I was playing around on the 4th of July and decided to shoot on AV mode to get a narrow depth of field. So far I liked what I've seen. Thought I would post it so others thinking about the HV30 could see how well it does on blurring the background, stock without any special lens.
First shot (Yellow Lab) zoomed 60% or so Ap F2.4
Second Shot (My chihuahua Zeke) not zoomed except for zoom fade and when on the dock. On the Beach I used Ap F1.8, on the dock I zoomed in at 50+% and Ap was F2.4
Third Shot (Andrew eating a Chip) Zoomed 80-90% Ap F2.4
Again this is with no add-on lens just stock as if out of the box. Video edit was just snip and placed no filters were used and NO Sharpen or Unsharpmask was applied.
This Video is unaltered.
Note: video was all shot hand held with no tripod. IS was on and Focas was Auto with IA focas on.

Very impressive quality!
I'm trying to find out the difference between the 30 and the 20 as i was going to get the 20. I rang canon Australia and they said the only dif' between the 2 is different technology??? Which is why the 30 is cheaper than the 20 ?????
I'm also wanting to see what the 20 & 30 film like
indoors at night in normal house lighting.
The house has pretty good lighting due to the fact the owner is an artist and he has lighting for his art that is displayed. I shot this in HDV 1080/60i cause I had a little more light than I am use to for indoor. You can see it was dark though due to the flashes from the still camera (Canon Rebel XTi) Other than that I think you would get somewhat the same results if you were to shoot on 720p @30fps, like I said it makes it brighter by a stop or two. The Canon HV30 is a step up from the HV20, they took the HV20 complaints and fixed them in this camera. The HV20 doesn't have 720p format and that alone is way better for darker shoots.
Thank you so much for the info on the HV30 and the footage, its made up my mind now to definitely
go for the HV30. God! the Quality is amazing and the depth of field for small camera is unbelievable, not to mention the night capture on it.
I didn't notice that the HV20 didn't have 720p format so thanks for pointing that out to me. Thanks again Ross for taking the time to show the performance of the HV30, it very much appreciated.
Like I said in 3-5 years SD Cards will be equal or better but right now you can't go wrong with a HV30 and on sale at newegg.com for $779.99 right now. It is a good deal.
