Looks great, but I really didn't like the sounds. They were so 'doctored' into make them sound like they were from a studio... that they sound like they were made in a studio.
  •
  • Easily the best movie I have seen with "no budget". Excellent all around! How did you come across two cars to blow up with no budget? hehe. Amazing work, I am looking forward to seeing the "making of"! Good luck making more films in the future, I can tell you will go far.

  • Chris Capel plus 1 year ago
Nice camera work here. The story was a bit hard to follow. Or maybe I'm just mildly retarded.

It's a shame you didn't spend more time on foley. It felt pretty thin. Especially compared to the production values of everything else.

Still, great job. Real professional cinematography. I liked how the camera was always moving, but it wasn't distracting ala Michael Bay.
  • Boogie Wonderland 1 year ago
your're not retarded at all.... ;)

Looks nice, but sorry the ADR is brutal, very distracting

Great look, Have to say, you guys have a lot of friends with gear and money to burn... Always have to give props to a short film put together on favours but the ADR and sound mix is a bit brutal, the only thing that brings it back down to an indie flick. Fix that up and you've got a winner on your hands. Well done boys

  •
  • Al Gonzalez III 1 year ago
Impressive stuff! And great job on your dialogue editing. It must have been a pain to sync it up since I imagine that camera does not have audio input.

Also, I'm interested in hearing what the no budget was since I know a lot of these shots are expensive to make.

  • Cameron Mackey 1 year ago
great job, would have liked to see some more live audio though, or at least some use of reverb depending on the area.

Agreed! The sound almost feels dead without any ambiance...

The cinematography was way over the top in many cases, crane shots for a casual conversation, a birds eye of two men sitting in a car, and close ups on things like lighting a cigarette. The quality was amazing but the cinematography did not seem to match up with the story alot of the time. The driving chase scene with the motor bike was amazing, and the car explosions were awesome. HOW DID YOU DO THAT WITH NO BUDGET?! I found that astonishing, I always love to see such high production value from a no budget film and also the color grading must be some of the best that I've seen, but the dialog seemed indifferent and the story was just a bunch of cliche action scenes and as always the editing could be tighter, i have the same problem I tend to keep shots and what not that aren't necessary and only delay the punchline until the audience loses interest. I hope to see more of these films! But in the end the camera operator did a great job I just think the cinematography was not well planned.

I have to agree with some of the things you harped on. Rarely was the CC off, if at all. Some of the light felt a bit harsh in the intro, but perhaps that's what he was going for.

The one thing that totally threw me off was sound. When it was good, it was great, but when it was off... man.

ADR was pretty rough throughout--none of the voices really felt organic... they didn't feel real. Also, the sound effects, specifically gunshots were far too weak. There was no presence.

The overuse of the jib was very noticeable as well.

Clearly this was a great endeavor, and in no way is this bad. It's just apparent now that you're at this level, so the critiquing is going to be more... well, critical.

The story was, as others have said, cliche and not very interesting. You may not be interested in writing though--you're clearly more of a director, but being able to tell a story significantly helps your direction skills.

I realize this was done with "no budget," but clearly there was some stockpiling of props and production equipment prior to this project.

Regardless, great effort, and you can only go up from here. Take into consideration some of the criticism that's been doled out here. If you can fill in the gaps, you'll be a well-rounded, great storyteller.

Pretty shots, good grade, great effects...but I can't say the same for the story, sound, or storyboarding, and I am not convinced it was shot with no budget; at the very least, I should phrase it as 'he who has the keys to a studio's bounty needs no budget.'

Don't get me wrong: great, great stuff. Keep it up. But the quality is so top-notch it's all the more so for the little things stick out.
