Note: I was mainly focusing on the iPhone video here and didn't have intentions of making this a comparison video so some of the 7D shots aren't properly exposed and some aren't even focused. But here it is regardless.

WoW, the iphone 4 footage is VERY impressive!
  • Thanks Bill Murray :)

  • No, no :P It's just because I was mainly focused on the iPhone, the 7D is really a lot better. But the iPhone ain't bad!
  • yeah, i mean i love apple but the iphone color is a bit white in brighter situations espeacially in high contrast areas such as shadows to bright sun light on objects like the painted doors. The 7D captures impressive thick color. Like Take Zero Productions said he/her/them wernt focused on the 7D as much. Great job!

I agree, the iphone seems to blow out the highlights.. but more importantly is the lack of DOF and control over exposure. Still, it's pretty damn impressive and convenience wise, invaluable. If the damn thing could only make calls ; ) I'll keep my 3gs for now..

Great comparison and hypnotic song.. I found myself checking the mail right afterward humming in my head, "gotta go out,... and check the ma-il..."...

    Love and Aloha, iamKP-

Yeah - what I take from this is - iphone can do some damn great video considering that you can then immediately Tweet or Email that video after. But if you need to shoot something really professional with lots options still go with the 7D. Still... wish I had one of these in college instead of a pixelfest camcorder to shoot my student films.
  • SKProductions2010 10 months ago
The look of the 7D footage is mainly affected by your skills, whereas the iPhone footage is not... Everyone who doesn't know anything about shooting video with a DSLR can just destroy the 7D footage!

we now need some action footage to compare moving objects :)
  • Haha, oh man, any un-stabilized movement that's faster than walking speed looks awful on the iPhone :P
  • Rokkas plus 1 year ago
how about using glidecam with it? :)
  • I used a Steadicam Merlin. I'm sortof biased against Glidecam. I'm saving up for a Steadicam Flyer ;)
  • Rokkas plus 1 year ago
yeah, i film everything hand-held, sometimes using a tripod, also saving, but for the glidecam
flyer is too much for me :)
but i still havent decided if i need a glidecam...
  • Oh, I can't even stand 7D footage hand-held. Needs stabilization! Heh, there's also the Steadicam Pilot, which is quite a bit cheaper. Steadicams take a LOT of practice to learn how to use, though
  • Rokkas plus 1 year ago
wow, these steadycams still look expensive with lcd screens and additional battery packs :)
i dont think i actually need that, but thanks, if i have enough money, ill maybe look for something you advised me to :)

Killing me. I may have to get an iPhone. Being able to fit an HD video camera in your pocket (along w/ all of the other goodies) may be too much to pass up. However, "rolling shutter" is obscenely bad in the iPhone footage I've seen so far. Pretty much unwatchable. It looks like you had this mounted to a tripod. Sort of at odds with the idea of having an HD camera in your pocket : ) Thanks for the test footage.
  • Yeah, like I said in my blog entry (see the description), the rolling shutter is absolutely apparent. It's less noticeable in this video for multiple reasons: good stabilization (tripod, c-stand, and Steadicam) and also because I conformed the footage from 30 fps to 23.976 for very subtle, but perfect slow-motion. I also took care to only use slow, smooth movements. But it's a great start!
  • ALBMAB 1 year ago
I was just reading up on the "rolling Shutter", so would the palmtrees in the background (45sec) be consider the rolling shutter? I didnt notice, until after reading this comment.
    Great Video and info!
  • It's hard to notice the rolling shutter in this video because I used slow, smooth movements and I also conformed the footage (made it slow-motion) which smoothed out the movement even more. If you shoot handheld with the iPhone, you'll REALLY notice the rolling shutter.

    Nice!
The tree at the end looked better on the iPhone!

  • Heh, that shot may be a little misleading, the 7D was at a shallower f/stop and I don't think it was even in focus :p

my thoughts exactly! saying "forget the 7D, I'll get an iPhone" (something I've heard in response to this video) is nonsense, but for pocket HD video capabilities, it's really very impressive.

Don't even put the iphone 4 on the same level of the 7d or any camera above...

the iphone 4 it's nice, but not a camera...
    altought nice footage.
  • mario verastegui plus 1 year ago
I believe his main purpose was to show that the video quality of the iphone 4 was very very good by using 7d video next to it, not to show which one is better, but to show where a cellphone nowdays stand on video quality.

Im actually impressed and anxious to see how it´ll be like in the future...

hmm where is Dr. Emmett Brown when you need him...

This is pretty cool, though i personally think its a bit misleading because they're both scaled down, i know you're not really comparing but would be nice to see them @ both high resolution,

anyways i own a 7d, do you think the iphone4 cam could be used as an a B camera?
  • You can download this in 720p (it's less compressed than in the Vimeo player).

And... no, this would absolutely not be good enough as a B cam :P

Informative post--thanks. Any idea how long you can film with your iPhone?
  • I actually filled mine up rather quickly (with only 2 days of shooting). But I had a about 5 GB of photos, lots of music, contacts, apps, etc. I am really regretting not getting the 32 GB version. A "clean" iPhone without much on it can store a LOT. 16 GB of 10mbps footage is about 26 hours worth of video.

it's very misleading to post both videos at the same resolution. shrinking video down always makes things look better. Blowing the iphone video up to 1920x1080 is the only way for a true head to head comparison. or even doing a side by side 720p to 720p comparison is a bit more accurate. Even when you download the video at 720p, you are still showing 2 videos in one frame (so you are doing atleast a 50% resolution for iphone 25% resolution for 7d).
  • You're right, but I didn't actually intend to even post this. I'm sure someone else will do more accurate tests :)

thats really interesting... of course iphone cant compete with the 7d cuz of the lens quality and all the other features, but is pretty impressive the iphone video quality!!! you can really do some stuff with that

You really want to see the difference, have the footage projected in a theater. I promise the iphone will look like a grainy mess and the canon will win. No big deal for shooting web video but I don't think it would hold up well in film fest situations. ;-)
  • I absolutely agree. Without stabilization, the iPhone looks terrible. It's also very blown out and noisy. I did my best in grading/CC to "repair" the image here slightly, but the raw footage is absolutely apparently worse than the 7D :)

someone clearly dont knows how to use a canon 7d.
  • I mainly had the 7D attached to my Steadicam to use as weight and to be able to mount the iPhone better. But I figured since it was there, I would just record with both. In doing so, I focused mainly on the iPhone video and didn't even focus some of the 7D shots. I tried to make this clear in the description/blog, but I guess some people missed the point.

  • Yeah, you're right. My intention was originally to only have it displayed on our website in the blog entry with a lot of context. Maybe I'll make another comparison that shows the "truth".

The aliasing seems much worse in the 7D-shots.
  • Download the 720 mp4 file, it's worse on the iPhone, but not by much :)

The iPhone 4 is good, impressive ! But the 7D is really better (image quality, sharpen, manual control, highligh changes, etc).
For a phone, it's really good, real potential !
    Nice test.

Look, no one in their right mind would consider iPhone4 being anything else but a toy versus 7D. I thing this is meant to show just that iPhone4 has a really cool camera since it's a phone.
  • Yeah, I'm not sure what this guy is complaining about. It was a simple comparison. Of course the 7D is better. But the iPhone, for what it is, is pretty darn good.
  • James Watt 1 year ago
isnt it amazing just how much a lot of canon owners seem to really enjoy the smell of their own farts. obviously missing the point of this great video.
  •
  • Paul Jay 1 year ago
iPhone 4 is pretty good, But you really have to compare full screen shots. Then you'll starting to see big differences.
When you scale any footage down to this size, it starting to look much better.

I think this is more to show how amazing the quality of a cell phone video function is now, and not a comparison video trying to tell others to go with one or the other. The fact that a cell phone can shoot something that's this crisp is revolutionary especially when compared to every other phone out there, especially my own. Regardless of the unnecessary complaints of the 7d defenders who are taking this video as an attack, i think this is a very amusing and great video because even though i myself know the 7d trumps a phone, a phone shooting something of this quality in the first place is incredible. Cheers!

Both of them had their moments. Over all I think the canon looked better, but damn the new iphone kills!
