that was really cool. i like the way many adults start with a serious look but after few seconds can help to smile...
    was that deliverately that way??
  • Jared Foster plus 1 year ago
I wasn't sure what this project would look like in the end but I wanted natural looks. That is very hard to do. I set the camera up and had a family member sit there and I pointed to the lens and asked them to look at that spot. I had them hold it for at least 8 seconds and then I asked them to smile for another 8 seconds. Done. Some family members could only hold that look for 2 seconds before smiling but in the editing I liked the serious stare to smile look. I was impressed that the kids were able to hold still for this long.

A winner of an idea and outstanding sample format to start. Another reason for fuddie duddies like me to get a cam some day. Will be watching for future entries

Get any camera and get started. My Mom already suggested we do this at least once a year to show the family grow and age.
  • George Mason plus 1 year ago
That'll teach us to listen to our moms. They are right most of the time and the rest of the time they are correct.

Brilliant! I would love to do this but unfortunately about 99% of my family either lives out of state or out of country.
  • Jared Foster plus 1 year ago
Start with your immediate family and add others as you can. Perhaps they can shoot themselves and you edit them. Hopefully over time you will collect all of them. Repeat every year.

Jared, this is something I have wanted to do for a while now. You would think that this kind of a video would be boring but it's so not boring. There is somhow an element of emotion that comes thorugh that is wonderful. Great work!
  • Jared Foster plus 1 year ago
Thank you. I agree in this crazy mtv cut as fast as we can edit there is something simple and interesting about looking at people. I look forward to seeing your family portrait.

I got together with my extended family today and did the same thing for my family portrait video. I hadn't seen my brother in eight years. Some of the expressions I got were priceless. I will post it soon. Thanks for the great idea Jared.

This is just stellar. I mean really, top knotch. This is the kind of thing that makes me wonder what magic happens in the all the little lit-up homes I drive by at night.

Three cheers. Heck, take five cheers.

Wow... I thought you must have had something unexpected sitting above the camera to generate the later reaction... until I read above how you did this. Great stuff Jared. Your family will be very thankful you've done this one day I am sure. Keith.

Is there anyway you can shoot a tilt shift "my family portrait" of your family down under? This would be amazing to see and I would love for you to join our group!

    What lens did you use?
  • Jared Foster plus 11 months ago
It was either the 50mm or 85mm. I think likely it was the 85mm.
