In 1985 trumpeter Miles Davis’s record contract was up and signed with Warner Brothers. Under the direction of Tommy LiPuma, he wanted Miles’s first recording to be bona-fide success as well as bring a young and funky sound to the younger record audience. Prince was supposed to originally produce the project but LiPuma brought in producer Marcus Miller. Miller, who’s success with Luther Vandross was bringing him lots of critical success and acclaim, played LiPuma the raw music of Tutu. He loved it and asked him to bring Miles’s band to play the parts, but was asked to play all the parts along with his friends George Duke, Omar Hakim, Paulinho de Costa, and Jason Miles during the sessions.

Tutu, named after Archbishop Desmond Tutu, was a highly electronic record that dominated the musical landscape during the 1980’s.

The curators of a Miles Davis exhibit in Paris asked Marcus if he’d like to perform“Tutu” in it’s entirety. At first, Miller was reluctant because Miles rarely played anything from his past. Over time he would develop a band with younger musicians like Miles, but wouldn’t mimic or reproduce the original album.

What turned out to be a one-time performance became an on and off tour around the world.The “Miles Revisited” band features trumpeter Marcus Miller, saxophonist Alex Han, drummer Louis Cato, and keyboardist Federico Pena.
