32. First Official iPhone 4 Music Video - flakjakt "Cascades"

Artist. flakjakt :: flakjakt.com
Song. Cascades
Director/DP/Editor. Marty Martin

Producers. Sam Toloui & Kelli Taylor

In an effort to release the first iPhone 4 music video, my good friend and musician Steve Failows [AKA flakjakt] and I collaborated over a period of less than a week to create the first iPhone 4 music video.

In 2 days (and up until an hour before the shoot), Steve wrote a new track specifically for this video and we loosely conceptualized for those 2 days in an effort to be first out of the gates with an iPhone 4 music vid. Our main goal, however, was simply to make a good music video, no matter what the camera.

Of course, I knew there would be obvious technical hurdles, so everything was structured to be shot to take advantage of the camera's strong points. Lack of lighting, aperture and shutter speed control were all taken into consideration when planning. And because I knew a lot of the camerawork would be locked off (something I rarely do), a lot of the cinematic vision was going to be dependent on how I cut everything together in post.

So, post production you ask? Seriously crazy. Going into it the goal was to create a video with a unique creative vision; something quirky, entertaining and yet, intimate and sincere.

I transcoded all footage to ProRes422. Once ingested into FCP I realized how much footage I had. I won't say how much, but let's just say we were crazy to shoot in 9 locations in 1 day! Overall the footage was surprisingly crisp (aside from low-light locations). I typically color correct in After Effects, but given the editing rush, I did everything out of Final Cut Pro. Although the result was a bit rushed and rough, we ended up embracing the look and think that it helps translate emotion well onscreen.

Hopefully people can forget it was shot on the iPhone and enjoy it for its content.

Enjoy!

    great work! I'm impressed by the quality of image from this phone. Nice editing and the locations, as varied as they are, work. Post work and grading is great.

    I love this. I found this video through your other video supernova. Your work is phenomenal.

    Wondering what you're exporting as? Your videos are playable on my iPhone. I'm wondering how I can achieve this.

    I love your commitment to working with your constraints, very cool.
  • Thanks. I'm a very cinematic/visual director, and my friends give me a hard time for shooting with the Canon HDSLRs and now the iPhone, but the fact is that it's an awesome challenge every time. I believe strongly that a true artist can make any medium work for him/her. Glad you enjoyed the video!

    Totally, keep making things :)

    @Marty

    Thats such BS ( what your friends are saying ) Your attitude reminds me of a saying "You can have the most expensive guitar, but can you play?"

    Many years ago people would make films with equipment worse than the iPhone 4. Didn't stop them from making great films!

    You did an amazing job! It's inspiring to see someone make a high quality music video just with a Phone.

    I don't care what it was shot on, that's a great video!
  • Thanks dude. That was quite honestly our ultimate hope. A great video is a great video regardless of format.

    I totally adore this. Fabulous job with the color, especially considering the source format. Really great.

    Not sure I understand the iPhone 4 video trend, seeing as you can get the same from other mini devices like the Flip HD. Seems like people have only just realised small cameras can shoot HD.

    The only thing I would comment on is the colour correction, which in a lot of cases seemed to try and compensate too much for the shadows and blow them out instead (obvious cases are 00:24, 00:27). I guess it's required to make up for the quality of the image, but it's worth mentioning.
  • Well there's no trend... yet. It's an experimental kind of thing. I certainly wouldn't ever choose to replace a real camera with this.

    As for color correction, to be quite honest, most of the footage was actually entirely usable. Color correction was a completely creative decision. It wasn't to compensate for anything. If you watch most of my work you will see that this is simply my style. So no, it's not worth mentioning.
  • David Watts 1 year ago
    A lot of people are rushing to be the first to film things with the iPhone 4, so that kind of is a trend. Not that it's necessarily bad, I just don't understand it myself.

    If it's a creative decision I would say not to do it, because blowing out the shadows looks completely unintentional and drops the quality of otherwise acceptable colour correction.
  • Well I suppose everyone's entitled to their opinion. For some artists experimenting with a new medium is a way to stretch their creative boundaries. As for the shadows... uh... don't know what to say. it was a stylistic choice and it looking completely unintentional could be said for a lot of material out there.
  • Michael Raiden 1 year ago
    Hmmm... I thought it was incredible. I love this video. I love this song. They both reminded me that I have emotions. Who cares about the shadows?

    Great idea on being the first. Vimeo seems to think the same.
  • David Watts 1 year ago
    @Martin
    I understand trying new mediums, I just mean that I don't understand the particular fascination with the iPhone 4. Like I said, nothing wrong with it.

    @Michael
    Just fyi, I know you originally wrote "Shut up David." at the end of your post. I don't quite understand why you're finding me so provocative or why you have to turn to insults in a creative forum.

    As for who cares about shadows - most people. If I can spot it as an amateur colour corrector, I think any professional will be able to. If it's a stylistic choice, fair enough - I just don't think it looks very good.
  • Lammy 1 year ago
    @Marty, your colour corrections are very well done and I like your style and creative choices. Very good music video, congratulations.

    @David, I and I think many people here, disagree with your comments that the shadows look "unintentional" or "not very good". It's a very European look that many viewers have gotten accustomed to over time, and seems to be a hallmark of very very chique high art material...
  • Tim Hashko 1 year ago
    @Marty: kudos for being the first one. I'm sure you are enjoying the exposure and great things will come out of this for you.

    @David: no one cares about shadows. Sure there might be a couple of nerds who will break down a video frame by frame and find what they think are "mistakes", but no one else really cares. Most people perceive a video as a whole. As a whole, it looks and works awesome.
  • Marshall Burgtorf 1 year ago
    I do not understand why people are so sensitive about critique, whether it be their own video or simply one they like. I would expect people to get upset on youtube but I thought Vimeo is for people that are serious about video production.

    We grow as filmmakers by listening to other perspectives of our work. We don't have to agree but there is no reason to be upset. Thank you, David, for trying to add more to the conversation than "AMAZING!".

    cheers

  • Mr. Erick Chévez 4 months ago
    I agree with Marshall, but honestly I have nothing bad to say about this video. Great Video Marty, I know it's been more than a year now but I stumbled upon it quite randomly and I loved it. I actually love the stylistic look that you used.

    I'm still waiting for my (cheap yet awesome for creative videos) equipment (Sony NEX and Gopro HD) so that I can start creating things. Videos like you inspire me to not give up trying to make awesome videos even though I can't afford super expensive cameras.

    really well done! loved the shot compositions, editing, as well as the color grading. i thought the colors worked well being in a music video. was there any green screen work done? the locations you chose were awesome, but some almost looked too good, ya know? like they may have been keyed in. either way, great job! crazy what can be produced with a cell phone in these modern times...
  • No green screen. All practical editing and camera trickery.

    Wow, great video, especially considering the what it was shot on. How exactly did you do the splitscreen shots? I would have thought that the iphone would have made it impossible to keep a consistent exposure between the 2 separate takes.
  • There are ways of semi-locking exposure. I definitely had a couple of areas where I had to adjust in post.

    That it was shot on the iPhone 4 isn't what makes this great. The song is infectious, Steve's performance is joyous and your visuals are inventive and feel connected to the music. I saw there was some discussion earlier in the thread concerning your grading choices, but I personally like them quite a bit. Overall this was just a real pleasure to watch. Great work, Marty.

    Thanks for sharing this with us Marty -- I enjoyed all of it. It certainly captured something that is hard to explain -- and through a phone for that matter.

    Also, if I have to give up enjoying things for what they are instead for what I would have done differently -- I hope I never get into film or video.

    What a beautiful looking video. You would have no idea about it was shot on a iPhone. But isn't that the point? And the guy who is complaining about the shadows didn't even bother to talk about all the other great aspects of this piece. Besides an average viewer will never see those "shadows" as anything other than artistic. Any band would love to have the kind of video that Mr. Martin has created here. Bravo for trying a new way of shooting video and getting great results! This is a fine example that you don't need gobs of money to create something spectacular!

    This was PERFECT! Dude, I just became your fan. Hey, three questions: how did you managed to hold the iphone, with a tripod? and how do you make that short flashy transition in FCP? And, dude, tell me the secret, how in the hell did you managed to make three guys dance in the same take? Really creative and inspiring vid, love it, BIG TIME!
  •
  • its great, well done. Post production is awesome. The only thing is that as someone who professionally works in videography, this raises the problem of availability of video equipment and people trying to do a job for money, doing a bad job, and tarnishing the industry even more. But then again I can't see people hiring someone with an iphone to film haha.

    It's awesome though well done.
  • I totally share your same concerns. Every time something cheap comes out and becomes readily available, a bunch of people come out of the woodwork thinking they can shoot professionally. Fact is though, that it takes talent behind the camera, and unfortunately this can lead to oversaturating the market with a bunch of terrible content. But, it's the way of the modern media world. I just enjoy little challenges like this one.
  • for sure mate, don't think im knocking you at all. You've done so well. I just can't take the 'ill film it with my mates camera' people.

    Also the new one is. Hello, im a photographer, my camera now does video so I can do video easily. Oh wait, I don't know how to video edit, never mind, I'll use imovie. Ok here's my invoice for a RIDICULOUS FEE.

    What a war we are fighting. I'm gonna just keep my eyes off these clowns and keep producing the best I can.

    Great job. I love the challenge of shooting with non-traditional cameras, the opportunity for ad/marketing gigs is untapped.
    This is a clip from a short film, found footage style, I did on an iPhone 3GS. Fun project with great talent.

    Here's the thing. When people are first at something, most times it's not because they were good, or the 'best', but most often just a little fortunate with timing. You Marty are none of the above. YOU ARE F*#KEN TALENTED!!! WOW!!!! Your creativity shone through brilliantly on all accounts. Apple should be proud and heavily promote as well as provide you with some treats for making them look so good. I'm not saying I'm impressed, but if you ever happen to be in Toronto, Canada, give me a buzz and I'll buy your lunch! Yes Marty, I want to pick your brain as well. Kudos. All in the same moment I feel dejected and inspired. Looking forward to more brilliance, keep up the great work!
    Cheers,
