Just a quick tryout of a $5 handcrank solution I pulled from the 'net (hackaday.com/2010/01/22/hardware-store-follow-focus/)
Basically a 4" hoseclamp, a drawer handle + screw. I used painter's tape to fasten a bent paperclip as a temporary needle marker, plus another strip of painter's tape affixed to the lens itself to place my focus marks on with a fine marker pen.
Use of a Marshall 7" monitor on my Canon 7D really helps establish sharp focus of each subject.
Not pretty, but it works!
