2. Sam Behymer - If You Don't Mind
The debut video for Sam Behymer's album Heartmouth. Filmed in the Santa Monica Mountains in Malibu, California on a wondrously beautiful day. Much thanks to JJ Starr, Nevin James, Chad Behrens, Kristen Rokus, Wade Addison, Rebecca Carpenter & Family, Carter Sapp, Heather Eagon, and Karee Maxson (the best PA ever).

Special thanks to the Malibu Police Dept. for citing us and kicking us off of the beach (if it wasn't for you guys we wouldn't have ended up having to transplant the whole shoot to this awesome farm, nor would we have had the opportunity to hang out with goats and blow bubbles and smoke cigarettes with a giant heart :)

Makeup by Kristen Rokus
Still Photos by Rebecca Carpenter
Directed by Alec Eagon

Shot on a Bolex Rex-5 Super 16mm with Kodak 50D 7201 Stock.

I wonder how much film you used...

I mean, you got B-roll and stuff......
  • Alec Eagon plus 1 year ago
Thanks man. I ended up using 400ft of film (about 12 minutes total....it was just barely enough for a 4:30 vid)

wow for 12mins of footage great job! you must have preplanned well. loved the feel makes me want to grab some artists around town and do something similar
  • Alec Eagon plus 1 year ago
hey thanks a lot Ben. ya i'm all about the preplanning. i like to spend more time daydreaming than i do behind the camera.....that did make for a number of errors in this video but i'm learning. if you end up doing anything shoot it my way, i'd love to see it

incredible colors, also impressive how you did that with only 12 mins of footage... when i click on full screen it doesnt' let me watch full full screen, it's like just black around the frame.. vimeo fault or is it not compressed to fit a bigger screen size or what?
  • Alec Eagon plus 1 year ago
thanks much austin. love the new analogue stills you just put up. not sure what the full screen thing is about...working on this end.

What was the lens used? (films rocks btw:)
  • Alec Eagon plus 1 year ago
thanks a lot -- lets see I used a Minolta MC Celtic 28mm wide angle f/2.8 for the majority of the shots and then a Minolta MD Zoom 70-210mm f/4.5 for a couple shots.

I see. Thanks for the answer. So 00:27, 00:30, 00:45, 00:55 is all 28mm? And 03:08 is a zoom lens? (or the other way around ;)
Everyone mentioned the colours so I won't repeat it, but I think the editing serves the song well. In addition, the band looks cool and unpretentious in the same way so that also helps ;)
However, try to shoot the same vid with a Canon 7D for example and it would look much worse. You can't beat film. Just my 1.99 swiss francs. *]
  • Alec Eagon plus 1 year ago
actually all of those that you mentioned are the 28. the zoom was only used for quick pull outs and such such as 1:06 and 3:16.

thanks - ya the over-saturation is the main thing that this vid has going for it....without that and the latitude the super-shaky freehand and would have looked like a home video camcorder, even if shot on a DSLR.

thanks for the 1.99 francs...that can almost buy me 2 boxed iced teas at Migros or "franc-o-fives" as my friends and i called them...of course that's in the french sector. u located in la suisse?

*] No, I'm not in Switzerland, but yesterday I've spent so much time on different forums and got sick of the cliche- 'just my two pence', so I tried different currency this time, which I thought matched Bolex narrative. London=my location.

Yeah, the pull outs look different . Btw, how do you fit Minolta lenses on Bolex, you have Rex5, am I right?

[Aha, now I see the clip -Bolex Super 16-test reel ] I remember watching that few months ago. Loved it. Bokeh/latitude/70-ish vibe of it.

Back to this clip. Yes, it is over saturated, but this isn't the only thing I like about it (talking about formal attributes). It is that 'softness' which I like. I can't stand videos-films which are too sharp. Today more than ever I feel like I need to get away from it( super-real). Now kids can shoot 1080p HD and the amount of HD content one sees online is the reason I respect film even more.

It is like the audio production, cleaner doesn't always amount to -better. Ok, this I can wager 2000 Italian liras. (you can't change that anymore, it's a collector value *]
