Nonna DOES know English
A little background:
My grandmother (one of the most AMAZING people on the planet--seriously) was born and raised in Italy, and she and my grandfather moved here shortly after I was born. I cannot speak much Italian--yet I can usually understand most everything she says.
Over Christmas, I visited her in the rehab center (she had a few strokes over the summer). She has had more difficulty lately in finding words--which makes it harder for me to understand her.
I noticed she had a new English/Italian dictionary. This was the first time I have seen slang included in one of her books--and I pointed out the word for "F*** off"--she started laughing--then I said it, and we both started laughing. Little did I know--my grandmother knows how to cuss in English, too!
ps: essentially she is saying that nobody working there knows what we are saying, but SHE does--and so does my dad...but he was working at the hospital so there was no danger of him walking in to hear us cussing up a storm. I haven't laughed that hard in a long, long time with Nonna.
