This is a short making of AT-AT day afternoon.

If you wanna know why I used a "pink screen", the reason is that I didn't have a green fabric large enough for the toy.

At the risk of asking something you probably get a lot...what camera did you shoot on?
  • Mike Murray 1 year ago
Yes. I too want to know!

  • Im completely agree with him!
    Thanks!!!

very cool..so it was not really stop motion right ?
but a very good clone stamp madness ?
    :-)
  • Daniel Prell plus 1 year ago
i wouldnt call it stop motion as he didnt take pictures (or short clips).
youre right it for sure includes some clone stamp work - but id say he probably did the shots where his little friend was not moving too much with masks in ae - clone stamp would also work but is so much more work.

great job, when i saw it i hoped there was a making of cause i was really interested in how you did the running with the dog shot.
great work with the make shift green/bluescreens. amazing combination of techniques. really like it!
  • Hishimaru Joshi 1 year ago
there definitely was stop motion involved in the running shot

Thanks for sharing ! Just question about the two dogs sequence. Why do you delete one dog, frame after frame, instead of shooting only one ? I don't understand.
  • Dan Pedersen plus 1 year ago
Good luck controlling every single dog in a dog park. Also, switching from two dogs to one might have been decided way after the shoot.

    My guess anyway.
  • Janne Roivainen 1 year ago
I guess he used the other dog for motion reference. Basically motion-capturing it by hand.

    Awesome!
  • Matt Murray 1 year ago
The second dog was needed so the gravel would be displaced with each footstep. Without the second dog, you would have noticed the "missing" gravel bounce each time the AT-AT's feet touched the ground. That's my guess anyway.

  • Rohan Blair-Mangat plus 1 year ago
awesome - nice job. I assume you used two dogs so that your movements of the AT-AT would look realistic. Very well done

wow, and this whole time I thought it was painted out puppet strings. Nice use of keying to get what you wanted. Lots of roto though for sure.

    Nicely done.
  • josh lyon plus 1 year ago
ah, but there are strings used also... as seen in the shot with the baby and the AT-AT?

Really appreciate this "making of". Also, that you made it short and sweet.

It's also great to see that there are people out there that love this toy as much as I do - and arguably more :)

This is so cool. It amazes me how you did the frame by frame on the dog, that must have been so time consuming! Great film and thank you, you are the hero of this office for today!

  • Utterly inspiring to see how even now the most "old-style" techniques can be used to create something wondrous. And in that way also, whether intentional or not, a fitting tribute to the original Star Wars movie, before all the digital baggage. Thank you so much for this "making-of" ... I am now determined to follow in your footsteps on my next project!
