ENG: Inspired by Leonard Cohen's masterpiece Suzanne, I made this video with my Canon HF S10, a present by my uncle and aunt, Carlo and Cristina. I edited the shots in Final Cut Pro and color graded'em with Magic Bullet Looks. The beautiful location is the country around a small town near Bologna where my uncle and aunt, Giovanni and Francesca, live: Rubizzano.

Here's a tutorial on how to make slow-motion shots like these: goo.gl/hws8

very nice - shame that all the sky shots are blown out or overexposed. a polarizer would make it perfect. good job.

thank you! you're right but even without a polarized I can make better shots of the sky, but for this video I just wanted to emphasize the grain, the flowers, the animals, the small rivers... :)

Really nice DOF. Not using autofocus really helps give a better look. Cool edit.

Thank you! I LOVE DOF :P

This proves once and for all that camcorders can produce nice stuff when their carrier has the vibe!
How did you manage the stability at 0:31 ?
  • Fabrizio Rinaldi 1 year ago
Thanks a lot man (and I completely agree with you!)
For the stability, well, the footage was 50i and then after deinterlacing it became 25p so it was slowed-down and therefore it looked more stable.
Then just a bit of Smooth-Cam filter was enough to stabilize it even more and make it look pretty good ;)

Looks great. What were the internal camera settings?
  • Fabrizio Rinaldi 1 year ago
Thanks, 50i mode (then deinterlaced after import to obtain slow-motion) 1/50 or more (mostly more) of shutter speed, very large aperture (the maximum for the zoom I used in every shot) to get a shallow depth of field. Manual focus of course ;) I hope I didn't forget anything...

    Cine mode?
  • Fabrizio Rinaldi 1 year ago
Nope, I never use it because it gives you great images (not always BTW) by changing the gamma and other parameters that I do wanna change by myself. Moreover it is explicitly to only use it when you shoot in 25p but I pretty always shoot in 50i because if you set 25p unless you use 1/25 of shutter speed the camera will shoot in 50i and deinterlace to 25p by eliminating one field. Actually this camera doen't support natively progressive scan, again unless you shoot in 1/25 of shutter speed...

Fabrizio, I have the hfs10 also but mine shoots in 60i not 50i. Is your camera a little different?

By the way this video is amazing!! Great job and keep em' coming!
  • Fabrizio Rinaldi 1 year ago
    Thanks a lot!
BTW your camera is probably a Canon Vixia HF S10 (the NTSC version), mine is Canon Legria HF S10 (the PAL version). They're the exact same camera, just with different framerates ;)

Are you using any DOF adapter? Very beautiful work!

This video was a great help to me. I was choosing between hv40 and hfs100 for a serie of small documentaries. So, the hfs 100 will be the camera.
  • Fabrizio Rinaldi 1 year ago
Wow thank you! I hope you're going to upload some of your work! BTW no dof adapter, that's what the camera can do.. (of course the footage is color graded)

Wow I have a S100 and I didn't even know it was capable of footage like this. Well Done

    Thank you!
Actually when I bought this camera I too didn't know it has all this potential.

Bello bello bello, hai usato un preset su magic bullet ?? Oppure lo hai composto tu ?
  • Fabrizio Rinaldi 1 year ago
Grazie! Ho fatto tutto io "mescolando" i vari filtri, ma può essere che sono partito da uno dei filtri già pronti. Comunque non lascio mai un preset così com'è, perché in genere ho un'idea ben precisa di quelle che voglio ottenere ;)
