Yes, this looks like the best formula for getting good SD play back on vimeo and at the same time keeping the upload file size relatively small. I put the mpeg-2 interlaced edit through VirtualDubMod using the most recent version of ffdshow which now allows compression using H.264 encoding. I'm quite happy with this vimeo rendering of the video - getting back to something like Stage6/AVI quality playback. Cheers boss.

Thanks John, I'm still trying to get some decent footage of the great crested grebes on Tittenley Pool - using up to 40x zoom they keep drifting in and out of frame and just as I move the camera then that is the moment when they decide to dive or dance, its much easier to photograph static flowers, but I'm sure you are fully aware of the problems involved with wildlife photography. btw I really enjoyed your puffin video and I am looking forward to seeing your next upload - maybe of some grebes??? But I've asked you about that before...
