The Friends of Willsmere Park fowpkb.org clearly state 1. they support a bridge crossing the Yarra at another location 2. That the whole park, not just the billabong is environmentally fragile and construction of a monstrous steel and concrete bridge with a 80m elevated ramp will devestate this rural environment only 7km from the CBD. With an estimated 4000 commuter cyclists per day this will turn this tranquil place into a commuter freeway of speeding cyclists. Parks Victoria offer 6 alternatives to this route which will achieve EXACTLY the same result of reaching the Main Yarra Trail, alternatives need to be re-examined. EROSION - already cyclists have taken short-cuts across the park and it is anticpated that they will not stay on the route but will form new routes causing erosion. There has been no Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for this park where recently the protected grey headed flying foxes have been seen roosting. What guarantee is ther that the 400yo River Redgum will survive the drilling of the piers to support the huge bridge? NONE. Will the City of Boroondara accept responsibility when a speeding cyclist knocks down a person on the shared pathway?
