thanks moka :) each is a bspline with just a dozen control points. i tessellate them something to something like 96 vertices along their length. i just increased the number until i didn't see objectionable edges on the sillhouette
the leathery look comes from the shader which is actually quite fancy but i haven't been able to show it off properly yet without having it look kinda silly or obnoxious. it's doing a realtime displacement mapping which is really subtle with that leathery skin texture (which is also procedural :)
the geometry is simply a lofted circle and yeah both the diameter and shape can be animated. i've been wanting to do abstract wires kinda like: bt-3d.de/div/abstract0104/ i seem to naturally gravitate towards horrific and creepy stuff it seems though haha :)
