Las Vegas, Nevada 2010 -- EVO 2010 took place at Caesar's Palace, a fancy pants casino and hotel in Las Nevada, where thousands of fighting game fans attended the annual tournament hosted by Shoryuken.com. For three days, players competed across several games including Super Street Fighter 4, all trying to get out of their pools. I, while waiting for my turn, shot some b-roll around the ballroom, aided by friend Ray, who also filmed with my other camera. What you see here is a collection of footage gathered in two days: the start of the tourney and the end of the tourney. Highlights include Daigo signing his autograph on a lady's chest at the Madcatz booth, sitting and filming amongst the crowd, and capturing the intense, exciting moments near the stage during the Super Street Fighter 4 grand finals.

Shot with Canon 5D Mark ii and T2i. Music provided by the legendary Neil Young "Heart of Gold" from Harvest Moon. Graded in Magic Bullets using a custom grade based on the Blockbuster effect.

Special thanks to Ray, Mark, Toshi, Terry, Jayson, Mike, Anthony, Ramin, Nima, Neidel.

    amazing, beautiful, intense, etc

Great stuff Richard. Makes me so sad to have missed it.

Thanks, Capy! One of the best EVOs marked by upsets after upsets! Next year, man!

I just got a 5D myself, what lense did you use to shoot this video is pretty AWESOME!

I am definitely going to EVO next year! Japan baby!
  • richhhard plus 1 year ago
    Hey Reno,
Glad you got the 5D! I just bought it a week ago, and loving the full frame capability, especially when used with my 16-35mm f/2.8 L USM. Ultrawide angle is so nice.

    I used three lens:
    1. 16-35mm f/2.8 L USM
Crowd shots, some tracking shots on an indieslider, some pans.

    2. Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM
On the indieslider a lot, and handheld. I think i used this lens to shoot the boob signing.

    3. Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM
Just two shots: the golden TE sticks and the new Chun Li TE stick.

Great video Richard. I have a 5DII as well and need to get an ultrawide lens at some point =P

I wish more people were like you and captured the "behind the scenes" of EVO. Match vids are cool, but not enough people film crowd reactions and venue shots.
  • richhhard plus 1 year ago
:) Glad you liked the video! Consider getting the newer version, 16-35mm f/2.8 L USM II. The thing costs a grip, though -- so start saving!

I think a few ppl taking video of the crowd. G4 had two dslr shooters decked out in zacuto rigs, filming on all three days of the tournament. I cant wait to see it next week! The G4 producer said he's gonna work on the 30 min EVO special with his editor all this week, trying to edit 40 hours of footage into an half hour. What a daunting task!

That video was amazing dude. Too bad I wasn't able to attend. Although, I think I still have scars from that whooping you laid down on me a few months ago in Hawaii. Haha.

    Hope all is well.

Mate, very well done. I love the choice of music also.

I'd like to hope many folks from Japan get to see this :)

I hope so, too! If I go to TGS this year, maybe I can film SBO and have another montage akin to the EVO 2010 one. Thanks for the love.

Hey, Richard. I was just wondering how you did those smooth rolling shots. Looks like you put the camera on a trolley or something? Very nice video, man!
  • richhhard plus 1 year ago
    Hey MugoTea,
I got the tracking shots with a tripod and indislider, or just the indieslider on the floor.

    indisystem.com/products/indislider_mini

Affordable and built-well, the indieslider is a great choice for those who dont want to spend big bucks and are on a tight budget. I got mine for less than 200 dollars. I have minor complaints about it, including the smoothness and accuracy of the slide itself, but the benefits outweighs the problems by a landslide.

Next, I want to try my DIY glidecam :) I outta practice my two-steps and ballet routine, first, to get down the movement. hah

  • What a coincidence: I'm getting the same 550D tomorrow.
Yeah, the Evo finals were BANANAS. Probably one of the best I've ever seen. Awesome vid!

    What's up, Kahleem,
Enjoy your T2i! I used the T2i for all my slo-mo shots at 60P. 5D can't shoot in 60P, so I had to use the T2i for everything slow-mo. It's a beast, though. Almost identical sensor to the 7D!
  • Yeah, I've been hearing that a lot. Considering that most of my work is with MMA and Kickboxing events, I'll definitely need that high framerate on my side.

Seriously loving this Canon series of HDSLRs

Awesome video Richard. Been following all your stuff since you started blogging about the competitive scene on 1UP.

Can you put some of the crowd shots in context thought? Like the shot of Valle, Mr. Wizard, and one of the twins getting crazy hyped, which match was that? Also, the shot at the end with Skisonic going nuts, is that when Ricky O. took a game off Daigo?

I'd love to make it out to EVO at least once, but Guam to Vegas is hella expensive.
  • richhhard plus 1 year ago
    Peter,
Thanks for the kind words! I believe alex was watching infiltration vs either shizza or mike ross. As for the Ricky, I dont remember where I took that shot... I just pointed the camera near the end of a final set, hoping something big or interesting would happen in the crowd. And, behold, Skisonic wild 'n out.

Thank you for this, it was a beautifully shot video that made me smile, makes me glad to be a part of this huge community. I wish I could have attended EVO but money was too tight, at least there were people there like you that are brining it home for those of us who unfortunately could not make it. Thank you for this work of art.

That is one beautiful looking video, and the music is (pun intended) golden. :-)
  • richhhard plus 1 year ago
Looking back, I unintentionally graded most of the scenes a yellow/golden hue. haha.

Man - this video is gorgeous. This is exactly what I want to do when I go to Evo next year.

Missed out this year - next year I'll be up there against Daigo - for sure.
  • richhhard plus 1 year ago
I'll see you next year in Vegas. let's team-up to film stuff, aight?
  • iamunr 1 year ago
    Absolutely! :)

    I'll bring my T2I for sure - we'll make a hell of a video.
