W H I T E R E D P A N I C - SHORT FILM

A little thriller about two guys mixed up in the wrong side of life, and the toll it takes on their character and soul. Written / directed / edited by myself. Previously, I also had a short at SUNDANCE '04.

    Thanks Kyle.
  • Kyle Shields 3 years ago
Haha, I wish. I would be filming my WWII short right now if I had the cash for the props, etc. Unfortunately, I only get minimum wage working for a grocer. But thankfully , I have a friend who's helping me buy the props.

  • Glenn (aka Avene) 3 years ago
Oh yeah, very well done! I'd been looking forward to this since the trailer, and it didn't disappoint :)
  • Ayz Waraich plus 3 years ago
that's a big relief man. All I see are flaws now.
  • Glenn (aka Avene) 3 years ago
That's normal when viewing your own work, but as they say, you learn from your mistakes. Still, I couldn't find any flaws myself, and judging by the positive comments you've received, I don't think too many other people have noticed any either. They're probably all in awe that you shot it on a HV20!
  • Yeah fantastic mood. I would def watch/purachse if you ever get chance to make full length movie. But about the comments above...We all do tend to critique our work and see the flaws that others never notice. Hey, "you learn from your mistakes" God bless !

How were those creep zooms done? Just slow zoom setting on the HV20 or dolly-in?
  • Ayz Waraich plus 3 years ago
the hv20 zoom, and couple done in post.

    thanks.
  • What are "creep zooms?"
  • Ayz Waraich plus 3 years ago
    those very subliminal push in's...

I think. First time I've heard the term myself. lol

    Whoa!!!
What an utterly fantastic ride! Shot beautifully, acted bravely and not to sound pretentious - poetic. I was moved. I am so glad I bumped into Karen's comment on this so I could watch.
I'm going to send this to many friends that act as well - great flim making. Congratulations - I'm subscribing.

  • Ayz Waraich plus 3 years ago

  • Tulaga Whitcombe 2 years ago
I second that! Question though... The sound? how? mics onset or post production. Redoing the whole sound track(voiceovers...etc)?
  • Ayz Waraich plus 2 years ago
Boom Mic on set. The dialogue is 99% from the location.

    And thanks!
  •
  • loonachic 3 years ago
most excellent! this was fantastic all the way through.
  • Ayz Waraich plus 3 years ago
    Thanks man.
  •
  • Wow, you blew me away with this, man. Awesome awesome awesome dialogue and I f**cking LOVE the camera work and choice of shots. The colors are also very raw and unsettling which is perfect for the mood.

I would love to know more about the process of how you made this film. Can you grace us with some behind the scenes stuff?

Can't wait to get home and throw this on my Apple TV!
  • Ayz Waraich plus 3 years ago
Thanks Michael. Glad you enjoyed it.

I don't really enjoy talking about the process, since i'm not even ever sure what it is. Always seems like Neta and I organize a bunch of people and we shoot a movie... If you have any specfic questions feel free to message me, and I'll see if I can answer what I can.

But yeah, you're spot on about raw and unsettling look. That was very intentional. I did a bunch of tests to see how I could really destroy some of the detail and definition in the HDV image, but keep the sharpness. It's very moody -- since I wanted it to feel very evocative of what those two guys were going through.

    Thanks again dude.
  • Thanks for the info Ayz. One last question and I'll shut up:)

Did you shoot this is order, and how many days/weeks was shooting?
  • Ayz Waraich plus 3 years ago
    Np at all Michael.

    We shot 3 days.

The End scene inside the store was the first. The next day we shot the hallway dialogue scene for a few hours, and then a day or so later we shot the chase scene.

The hardest part was getting everyone's schedules to line up, since everyone was doing this in their spare time in between paying bills and life stuff.

Ayz...AMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING SHORT FILM! It's at the top of my all time list. The screenplay is flawless IMO. Dialog was so natural and the story flowed perfectly.

I know you worked long and hard on that score, it shows! I might have to email you to talk about how you went about recording your sound.

Again man, can't say it enough, I loved this film!

PS. Where are your actors from?
  • Ayz Waraich plus 3 years ago
Thanks man haha. Very cool to see you loved it.

Feel free to email me. I'm around doing some writing today.
  • Ayz Waraich plus 3 years ago
oh and the actors... sama's my brother, and Bass is his best friend since they were kids. We all grew up shooting stuff together.

Just prior to this short they both became serious about acting, so it was nice timing.

  • Ian-T 3 years ago
Wow....I'm speechless... I think I'll just echo what everyone else here had to say with one addition...

I'll give you ...hmmm...about a year.... if that... before we all start seeing your stuff on the "Big Screen"...cause you got some serious talent. Just don't forget us little people.

    WATCH OUT HOLLYWOOD!!!
  • Ayz Waraich plus 3 years ago

That guy is right about the big screen for you guy..

See, the key to any craft is knowing how to produce million dollar results with spending little to know money. LOL..

You are truly a viable director now because you have proved that you know the tricks of the trade and can deliver without the need of others who may not believe in your capabilities or vision as much as you.

I and others love your work because we can see innovation, ingenuity and a persistence in it. You have just proven to the world that it truly is all about the artists and his or hers creative ability to create something from nothing, rather than how expensive the tools are..

I say again, good work man.. and from a fellow innovator.. Thank you for getting it right..

Fantastic stuff... though I have a script that deals with some very similar elements (feature length) that I have been bopping around for a few years now. So if by chance I make it, please don't think I jacked your ideas.. if anything, it can be called homage ;)
  • Ayz Waraich plus 3 years ago
haha, you'll have to beat me to it. Since I have a similar feature script with even more similar "similar elements".

Worse comes to worse we just duke it out. ;)

    Thanks Tizzy.
