“Electric Flower” is patent Melvins: marching snares herald a distorted western-influenced guitar line that propels a path into a groove laden verse laced with the insidiously catchy vocal harmonies of Buzz Osbourne and Jared Warren, only to pull the floor out into a dense breakdown of undulating heaviness. In keeping with other entries in the Scion AV remix series, the reinterpretations on show here are nothing short of radical reworkings, this time courtesy of UK electro DJ Doorly, NY-based nu-disco producer Lovelock, UK dubstep pioneer MRK 1, and SF based producer J Phlip. In a career whose most consistent attribute is diversity of sound, few Melvins fans have heard the band in these contexts, veering from Doorly’s Bali-funk tapestry, to Lovelocks’ propulsive 80’s industrial beat, to MRK 1 shifting the vocal line to a toast atop a grimey dubstep beat, and finally to the comparatively relaxing pulsating electronic tones of J Phlip’s total song revision as minimalist techno.
