Through June 18-20, 2010, 5 youth participants from the Student Conservation Association attended The 12th Annual Allied Media Conference in Detroit, MI, where the conference has been hosted for the last 8 years. The Allied Media Conference attracts more and more people who are interested in using participatory media as a strategy for social justice organizing.

The youth (Michaela Covington, Gabrielle Hayes, Alisha Peoples, Chukuma Uduma and Aunjelyse Staples) were able to attend though a generous grant through the Skillman Foundation’s Good Neighborhood’s Initiative. These youth also represent 2 Detroit neighborhoods (Brightmoor and Cody/Rouge communities) in which they live or attend school.

These same youth also comprise a small contingency of the Student Conservation’s Conservation Leadership Corps in which they will use the journalism and interviewing skills they developed at the Allied Media Conference to interview and train their peers. The youth will also be documenting their experiences and how their work over the summer has impacted their community with iFlip video cameras also sponsored by the Skillman Foundation.
