47. iPhone 4 with EnCinema iPhone SLR Lens Adapter & Owle Bubo
1 year ago
iPhone 4 video shot using a $90 Canon EF 50mm f1.8 DSLR lens on the EnCinema SLR Lens Adapter attached to the OWLE Bubo from iphone35.com and Vid-Atlantic

It uses the Owle Bubo and the EnCinema SLR Lens adapter to mount SLR Photographic lenses to your iphone or ipod touch 4G.

HEllo. WANT. so, the Bubo is $100 right? and the EnCinema is $200? correct?
  • Hi Chris, Yes apprx prices. Dont forget a photographic lens as well.
You WILL need a stronger diopter added between the OWLE and the OWLE lens for the combo to work. It's all in the works and they will have the DSLR OWLE out soon.

Nice! I have a DSLR already, so I have lenses. I'm going on a humanitarian trip to Malawi in a couple of months, so the combination of this and my iPhone 4 has me very interested. I assume that it still records the image upside down? You'd have to hold the Bubo upside down to shoot?
  • Actually there is already an iphone app (called almost dslr) that should flip the image right side up as well as turn off the iPhone auto focusing.
  • I just tried the iPhone app called "almost DSLR" and it worked great using this combo! I was able to flip the image and lock down focus on the iPhone as well as control and lock down exposure levels! Plus lots of other features I have yet to try...more to come...

  • The Pentax K-x as well as other DSLR's look great but you missed the point. It was a fun project to try. Also, the Pentax can NOT edit within the device, upload and do all the other things that the iPhone 4 can do. Try to make a call with your Pentax, I bet you cant do it! ;) Thanks for watching!

I know where your getting at, and I like to play around with this stuff, and I think it is cool for what it is. I guess I should have pointed my comment more towards people like Chris Hahn. I was responding to that type of thinking.

Sorry, I didn't mean to put down your work for what it is, because I am guilty of doing similar things to see how it would all work out.
  • Nothing to worry about, I understood.. we use DSLRs as well. Different projects call for different tools and sometimes people just want their videos to look a little different now that everyone owns a DSLR.

*sigh* No offense, but the quality looks like it took a large step down from what a naked iP4 can shoot. Also, there's still random blurring as sort of a vignetting effect but just not black.

I see that it's a "doing it for the sake of doing it" project, but I just feel things like this are a step in the wrong direction for getting people to make quality video.

i actually like the look. I would much rather walk around with a cmount on if possible rather than a big old lens=) See if you can adapt a cmount onto it?

    I like it!

    Music? x
  • Thanks!
The music is something that I produced real quick to go along with the test footage.

I'm messing around with this set up. Good looking footage! Question, I know the almost DSLR app will flip the image vertically, though looks like everything is still backwards horizontally. Anyway to fix this to make it easier to shoot? Or do you just deal with it?

    Again, great job!
  • we've been writing the maker of almost DSLR to add the horizontal flop option..you should email them too via the app.

I know I’m replying to this article a little late (3 mos) but I hope it helps someone else make a buying decision. There are a few things to be concerned about. Now that the iphone 4 is out they have jacked up the price from 129 to 159. (not a big deal if it were a permanent solution) They are not backwards compatible (iphone3/3g, 4) because of the microphone. I”m weary of spending the money not knowing if it will be compatible with the next incarnation of the iphone. To replace the owle bubo every year or two along with the phone is a little ridiculous. I have found universal mounts for much less, but not one with a microphone boom.
I love the product and the idea, but with the iphone 5 just around the corner, excetera… along with Apple’s reputation for redesigning from the ground up. This is way to expensive for the casual user, and this is not aimed at the professional crowd.

This footage looks awful (I have some iPhone 3GS concert videos on my profile so I know what you guys are facing). This definitely has convinced me that iPhone addons are a step in the wrong direction. Thank you for sharing.

Panasonic GH2 in my future. The LZ10 was an awesome camera when I had it years ago and I'm glad Panasonic finally has a good RAW camera/video instrument sorted.

why do you need 2x 10mm macro filters?
could you use one less or none to help fix vignetting when trying to take regular 5mp pictures?
  • No it wont work. If you use none or 1 less than the edges will appear and you will have strong vignetting and the iphone is not capable of macro focusing so closely on the ground glass within the adapter without the strong macro filters.

Great video guys. I love this! At the moment I only have a iPhone 3G but if I upgrade I would love to purchase something like this.

Check out DSLRInspired.com for the DSLR Community and forum.

how would i find out what lens diameter (mm) of the lens of owle bubo i'm getting? can't seem to find out what size it is...since its stated that i should choose between 46mm or 49mm to attach the EnCinema adapter.
  • If you bought your OWLE after October of 2010, then it more than likely shipped with the proper 49mm filter diameter lens. We've also just updated our site to feature the EnCinema for OWLE kit... please visit
    vid-atlantic.com Thanks!
