This performance was filmed at Hall Two of Kings Place, London in an ELISION concert given on the 7.06.2010
The composer, Aaron Cassidy, writes, "I was honoured and humbled to be asked by Ensemble SurPlus to contribute a piece for the memorial concert of their conductor and founder, James Avery, who died in March 2009. Jim was one of the most delightful, kind, and generous people I have had the opportunity to meet. As with so many other composers, I got to know him first while I was a student (initially at the Schloss Solitude Summer Academy, and later at June in Buffalo). His commitment to young musicians was extraordinary, and the way he dealt with students - patient, friendly, endlessly supportive, calm, non-judgemental - is a model I will continue to strive for now as a teacher.
'memento/memorial' for solo oboe is a very small gesture that represents an enormous respect and admiration not only for Jim but also for his long-time friend and colleague, Peter Veale, who, for me, matches Jim’s balance of grace and overwhelming talent".
