UPDATE: Canon sent me my 5d with a new sensor under warranty :-)

A laser light burnt my sensor. Shot at Madrid'd Gay Pride Parade in the street: vimeo.com/13432785.

Look also at this video in youtube:

The very same noise occurs when the laser hits the 5D!

laser lights can harm your camera forever. It depends on things like the intensity (disco laser lights can be very powerful), the frequency of the laser and the angle. I think I was unlucky, but I would not take that risk in the club
  • Justin MacCarthy 1 year ago
it is funny that the laser looked like it was at a slight angle yet the burn came out perfectly flat... thanks for posting!! Sorry you lost your sensor. : (

Which lens respectivally focal length did you use? It doesn't look like a long lens so I guess this laser can also damage the retina!
I would say this laser (or at least how they used it) is illegal and Google could be happy if they just have to pay your damage...
  • Agua 1 year ago
I used Canon'n 24-105 lenses. Focal length, I don't know, maybe 35mm. Thanks for your support.

  • Hello! Definitely very unlucky, and we are very sorry for that. Just to tell you that we published your video on our blog (erassociados.com/blog/) which is linked to this website (erassociados.com), both about photography. It's sad indeed but it's actually also a good example of what can happen with a camera while facing a laser light. Good to alert our Brazilian and Portuguese speakers photographers and movie makers who read us. Thanks a lot for sharing it and any news you may e-mail us to guilherme@evertonrosa.com. Thank you very much. Regards from Southern Brazil.

maybe this can even cause serious damage to eyes..
  • Agua 1 year ago
I was not looking thru the viewfinder, jjust to the liveView monitor. Otherwise, maybe I would have eye damage.
  • Stu Haight 1 year ago
You were in video mode, there is no way you could damage your eyes because the reflex mirror thing was flipped up, lol. This video causes a different kind of damage to the eyes, like, rage-eyes.

I have a 3MOS cam (newer version of 3CMOS, an HMC40), I'll have to look into this concerning any issues like this...
  • Stu Haight 1 year ago
But of course if you're the clubber it will damage your eyes...
  • mungkey 1 year ago
yeah, that's exactly what i meant. but unless ur putting ur eye in something like a zacuto finder in live view mode, ur eyes are still exposed and have 'some' chance of catching the laser beam sweeping at ur direction.
  • Agua 1 year ago
I was looking through a view finder

Why did you post this before getting a response from Canon? You should have waited and told them it was a spontaneous malfunction and demand a replacement. Now they know the cause, their decision could go either way.
  • Agua 1 year ago
you're right. Whatever the decision, I will submit it here.
  •
  • Philipp Salzgeber 1 year ago
I highly suspect the laser was used in an illegal way, there are (EU?) laws that govern the use of lasers, and it looks like that this laser falls into a class that has to be operated by a trained person as it is also very dangerous to the eyes.

    Philipp
(I once burned a pink streak on the sensor of my Coolpix 4500 when doing a time-lapse sequence and the sun came out behind the clouds)
  •
  • kj daniel 1 year ago
Did you buy the camera with a credit card? See if you have any protections regarding damage.

The right thing is for Google to step up and get you another camera. That laser was obnoxiously ridiculous.

Or for Canon to replace the sensor. Their product should be made to withstand lasers and the sun, to a point.
  •
  • IndiEvolution 1 year ago
Not only did that hurt to see, the company should be investigated. Whoever was in charge of the light display has very likely permenantly damaged the retina of several people in the crowd. The company should be charged. I can see a guy messing with the laser on the stand. Light shows are designed so they do not directly affect the eyes. The fact that it damaged your sensor is proof that they were misusing the equipment and should suffer the consequences.
  • Theis Poulsen 1 year ago
You cant really say that because the camera gets damaged a human eye will also get damaged.

Problem with the camera's is that we put a piece of glass on it that focuses the light.

If you point a big tele directly at the sun it can melt the hole camera.

Please keep in mind that it's not because I don't feel sorry for the guy as you can see in the youtube link my camera suffered the same fate :(

    //Theis

  • Peter Hainzl plus 1 year ago
I really can not understand that the only reaction to this damage is to warn about that. Like Philipp above said there are laws which regulate the usage of this thing and it looks like this laser was not used in a proper way and/or is not allowed at this environment. For me a case of damage to property. In case of damage human eyes it is bodily injury. I would make a report.

One of my fellow Danes have just experienced a very similar laser light that made a similar streak in his sensor, I've invited him here to share his story and maybe Canon's response. It's on youtube, search for user TheisPhotography "Laser light Kills Canon 5D Mark II"

Thanks for the warning, I'll be sure to pack my camera away if I see any laser shows. When you think about it, it's kinda obvious in a way, a laser is a very concentrated light and the lens only intensifies this alread intense light, probably into something mildly lethal, I'm going to check my manual thoroughly to see if they warn about stuff like this, that may spell bad news for (free) replacement. You must be able to get a new sensor for a price though, I couldn't imagine they'd be willing to just toss such a great camera.
  • Agua 1 year ago
Thanks, I've added your link in the description. Note that the same noise can be heard when the laser heats the sensor. Amazing

  • Agua 1 year ago
Gracias Eloy, la verdad es que soy un poco pesimista, pero insistiré al servicio post-venta sobre el tema.

Hey I can see that I am not the only one :)

It's my video your are linking to :)

I got my camera fixed within the warranty. I just send it into Canon stating that something must clearly be wrong with it.

I did not write how it had happened just that I suddenly had a line on everything. I got the camera back 2 days later with a new sensor.

    //theis
  • Agua 1 year ago
theis, you were clever. Let's see what happens
  •
  • Thorbjørn Kühl 1 year ago
It would appear that Theis who had a similar problem did not tell Canon or the shop where he bought the camera about how the damage happened, it was repaired/replaced under warranty.

I've scanned though the 5D instructions manual and haven't found any warnings about lasers, only that you can damage your eye if you look through the viewfinder at the sun, so Canon shouldn't be able to claim it was used in a wrong way even if you tell them how it happened, IANAL but they might be able to sue the lasershow if they used unsafe lasers.

You can see a man up on the bus manually moving the laser. He should probably be found responsible for this, scanning a high power laser through a crowd like this is incredibly dangerous.

As you can see from the video, it only takes a flash for the camera sensor to be permanently damaged. Any laser in that power range is going to be capable of causing permanent, crippling blindness instantaneously.

Sorry news about your camera, but be thankful you made it away with your sight.
  • Agua 1 year ago
I din't know it could be that dangerous for the eyes. The crowd watching the parade was huge.

    Hey there!
I came over here from Jem Scofield from the C47... and this is somthing i dont want to happen to my 7D. I think lasers have usually something like a maximum strength, because at some point peoples eyes get hurt. And i have acutally never heard of something happening to a camera when the laser is used correctly... so i think that the laser in that video is kind of overpowered or something... not a good idea...
I will have a event shoot on the 6th of august.. and it may envolve lasers.... i better watch out...
