description about TRACTOR

The Tractor name comes from the usually used term for agricultural machines. The visual object on the screen is representative of the axis of a tractor engine. The center of the engine axis. The audiovisual narrative in place characterizes the behavior cycle of Tractor which can be metaphorically compared to the behavior of a Wasp, thus assuming it's organic and non-linear changes in speed, rotation and movement. This non-linear behavior is shown by the visual deformations that Tractor assumes along the 3:30 minutes. The sound is being used to drive the narrative. It's not only representative of what is visually happening in scene but also suggestive of what is happening inside Tractor, in areas that are not visually "open" to the viewer such as the central cylinder of the object (or the Wasps heart). I t progresses from an atmospheric sound scape that sets the "mood" in first part of the visual piece to a second moment where the extreme sync takes place representing what is visually going on. The extreme contrast between different shapes and forms reveals what Tractor is in it's essence: a spatial and temporal distortion machine.

very nice. is obviously going to get compared to gantz graf a lot.. but stands up to that quite well. Is any of the animation audio reactive? or purely timeline driven?
  • ontologist 2 months ago
Yeah, Gratz Graf was what I thought of too... do you know the production team that made that video?

Hey dude, was really nice to work with you!! ...even though we never had the chance to meet face-to-face we were both in the same mindframe! And the result is here to prove it :) ...let's do more! ehehehe
Btw, the submission to 1.0 is done! :))))))))))))) ...let's hope for the best...

I like it a lot, I want more of this. [oh, it would nice to make it realtime, and reactive perhaps although one of its strings points is the script and syncrho imho]

My favorite part is the progression from the "meandering" near the beginning... and then something unexpected happens at 1:57 that defies the previous mechanics driving the system. That introduces the really unusual transformations at 2:03 where things quickly appear and disappear. These transitions somehow destroy any logic that had previously governed the tractor, and reveal the essence of the distortion. It looks beautiful to me.
  • brunopapas 2 months ago
thanks Kyle. That's exactly what we tried to imply in Tractor. To play with visual and audio contrasts and somehow come up with the unexpected ...thanks for the way you depicted the narrative :)

Really like this, since I work in 3D too. Can you give us some tips on the way you animated this geometry in Maya?
Thanks and keep up the awesome work!

Wow! Great! What was the first thing - sound or video?
  • brunopapas 1 month ago
    hi Andrew,

This is how we worked: Martin had a couple visual concepts (10-15 secs animations) with different things going on there. I mean, colors, movements, deformations and so on). I worked a few ideas on each one of them and the actual look and feel of Tractor u see here became the one where I actually felt the right one to go for. from that point i developed the a sound concept for the middle part of tractor - the crazy bit :) - and sent it to martin so he could have a play and work on the motion side. While he was doing that I was creating the intro sound for tractor and martin was feeding though some work in progress for me to have a feeling and make some adjustments. At this stage I communicated a few ideas to martin on what mood and animation style would suit the audio I was doing for the intro so he could work on this part well. Once finished I sent him the sound so he could build the animation around the audio narrative. Soon Martin provided not only with the beginning of tractor (adding to the middle part we had before) but a conclusive end to it. All i can say is it totally blown my mind to see how well he portrayed what was going on in my mind for this. So now we had the whole movie and just the end audio missing. This was the last stage where I kept working and adjusting stuff along the tractor and building all the audiovisual syncing for it.

So, I mean we didn't work totally one thing before the other. It was a constructive and adaptive work method we had to carry along a couple months working on and off, producing bits that would stay there and some bits that would be scraped out. There was no real deadline for this and our main goal was "Let's push pixels and stretch frequencies to the limit" and make something mechanic with organic lookalike behavior. It's not everyday you find someone exactly in the same mind frame as you but I guess I was lucky enough to find martin inspired by the same values :)

Ooppsss, I think this might be enough. Sorry for this long explanation but once I had some emails flying around asking more details on the project I thought I would be a good idea to finally talk a bit more.

Thanks for all comments guys. Nice one!

Definable extrapolation methods per channel: loop, PING PONG, and progressively repeat animations... you know?
  • ping pong is coll :)
