Recently I was asked by the wonderful and talented Ruth Marks, the creator and person behind the Ypsilanti based FLY Children's Art Center, to create a video that helped share what FLY is and why it's a unique experience for children.

From the FLY website:

"FLY open studio sessions are an environment where children are self directed artists. Children at FLY practice decision making, problem solving, risk taking and creative synthesis in a safe and supportive environment."

I've been to FLY several times in the last year and it really is an important and inspiring program :)

I love seeing kids in that creative trance too :)
I <3 Ruth. I'm getting all choked up listening to her talking about the kids and how she's gotten to this point. I'm glad she didn't tell them what to do too.

Thanks baby * For giving me feedback on this video before it went live :) I loved hearing about her getting to "this point" too... it's crazy sometimes how people end up finally getting to the point where they are happy.

I really liked how she said she kept leaving teaching - and kept coming back to it in a slightly different way.

*high five* Thanks :) She came over earlier today and she did really love it. She got a little choked up when watching - which is the best compliment. And I will show your Mom when I head over for the script.

Really superb concept, idea and so well shot (music perfectly chosen too).

Thank you Remyyy! :) That is so nice to hear - I was more than happy with how much Ruth liked the finished video. I really love the FLY program and it's great to be able to do something like this for it.

love it! Canon with the blade? and 50mm?
  • mike ambs plus 1 year ago
Thanks Hedge :) And yes, that's right on for the equipment. Most of the stuff with the kids was just filmed with the HFs20... they move so fast most of the time it's too hard to keep them in focus. Ha.

I love the idea of such a place, makes me want to be a kid again and just create whatever I am thinking with no judgements, pressure, or preconceived notions of perfection.
Wonderful job, Mike. The message that this is giving is inspiring and makes me smile. :D

P.S. - I really want your taste in music. :)

I wish I could heart comments on Vimeo :) I would heart this one. I get quite excited when Ruth holds adult classes - she had one several weeks ago at the brewery in town and Erica and I made a somewhat-lame volcano.

I am very happy this video made you smile - and ha, I'm sure your taste in music is awesome.

I wish that were possible, too!
She holds adult classes as well? This makes me want to travel up to Ypsi even more now. :D And I'm sure that the volcano you and Erica made was not lame whatsoever.
