This video is in 1080P HD. Press play, then pause, and wait until the video fully loads before playing :)

Josh Rawiri is a fantastic new talent from Western Victoria. His music is a fusion of blues, roots, rock, slide, dub/reggae and the ‘totally experimental’! This clip was shot on the Panasonic GH1 with Zeiss prime lenses.

Thanks to Josh, Marina, Justine, Jono, Lochie & Karen. Special thanks to Tess for spending a whole day in full body makeup filming in a damp, cold cave. Award-winning body art by Marina Torjinski.

Oh my God. Oh my God. Cool sound.

But oh-my-God, that camera looks AMAZING! Did you use the PTool hack or are these factory settings?
  • Peter Corbett plus 1 year ago
Hi Joe, I used the C-settings for AVCHD. I think it was around 50mbs.
  • Joe Rawlins plus 1 year ago
Wow. Kudos. i have had nothing but problems with the hack. My camera loads the firmware fine but then gets stuck in "native freeze". Did you have any of those problems?

Man, if i could afford PL mount lenses I would totally go this route. I'm thinking of getting some Leica glass for my GH1.

No freezes except with the 20mm in one very detailed shot, which I didn't end up using anyway. I used 1080 25P Native AVCHD. The lenses were actually Zeiss Contax C/Y mounts with a Cameraquest adaptor.

Thinking back I shot a fair bit in 720 50P as well, to get smooth slomo. It seems to upscale very nicely.

I second the previous comments. Aside a costume option IMHO not suitable considering the dramaturgy. She should be completely naked or dressed up in order to hide the costume.

One of the best if not the best GH13 example so far.

Thanks for that. I wanted to do some cleverer stuff. ie like when Josh walks past Tess in the forest, as it transitions from the mid-shot to the close-up, it would be the cave girl standing there. He looks around and she's gone. Was she even there in the first place?

Like many music videos, there was no time or budget to do a lot more. But I found the whole GH1 experience so addictive, if I'd had more time to spend with the cast, I would of kept shooting until they told me to stop!

LOL You're a true shooter, nothing else to add here. Keep up the good work!

    Cheers,

I enjoyed the clip Peter - your GH13 holds up very well. Of course its your work behind the camera that really shines...impressive. Looking forward to checking out those C/Y primes at the AVPA meeting on Tuesday. See you there.

Beautifully shot video! I know the Zeiss primes make all the difference but, what were your "in camera" settings? The Contrast, Noise Reduction, Sharpness, Saturation values? Also, did you shoot in one of the pre-configured film modes like Nostalgic, Smooth, etc.? Thanks.
  •
  • Peter Corbett plus 1 year ago
I just left everything as standard except for selecting film mode "smooth".

This is amazing Peter! Great work!

What kind of steadycam did you use with the GH1?
  •
  • Peter Corbett plus 1 year ago
Thanks Renaud. I used a Glidecam HD2000. It's a pretty cheap steadicam variant and is suited to the light weight of the GH1. But it is very difficult to balance on the Glidecam. I shot those scenes at 720 50P so I could slow it down and smooth out the motion.

Can you point me to the lens's that you used and where you got them from. Nice Video!
  •
  • Peter Corbett plus 1 year ago
Hi Jason, I used the 20mm Panasonic 20mm on the few wide shots, and Zeiss Contax 28mm 2.8, 50mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.4 on the rest. Th old Contax lenses are great for video (with a 4/3 adaptor). I got them on eBay.

Beautiful images Peter! And great talent in front of the camera as well.

Did you use class 6 or 10 cards?

    MANY THANKS
  •
  • Peter Corbett plus 1 year ago
Class 10 Sandisk Extreme 30mbs. No freezes at the 54mbs hack setting except on one static shot with the 20mm pancake. Too much detail I think for the codec/processor.

    Hi Peter,
The camera can only do so much, your knowledge and experience also accounts for these great pictures. Nice work as always.
    Simon.
PS. I'm sold on the GH1 now too. it was going to be a 5DMK 2
  •
  • Peter Corbett plus 1 year ago
Thanks Simon. Just remeber the newer GH1's can't be hacked (as of Oct 12) and the GH2 is just on the horizon. But I understand it doesn't do 25P so I may be hanging on to my GH1's.

Just watched it again - great work!

Is there a difference between shooting native 25P or in the 50i wrapper? Or is it the same image?

    THANKS!
  •
  • Peter Corbett plus 5 months ago
I'm not sure, but I think the 25P native mode would be a sharper more "complete" image than the field-based 50i mode.
