From the Online Marketing & Media show Creative Directors Showcase 25th June 2008. I did a presentation on Radiohead and their clever online marketing.

I hope no-one minds that I used their footage in there.

I specifically use clips of Flight 404's amazing Weird Fishes video: vimeo.com/935317

And everyone's favourite James Houston's Big Ideas (Don't Get Any Video): vimeo.com/1109226

And of course (please don't sue me Radiohead) - I use a big chunk of their video for No Surprises - which you can buy here: snipurl.com/no_surprises (link to iTunes video shop)

stellar presentation! I run an online marketing company (otmg.net) and this is such a great representation of the ideas we try to get our artists to implement. The difference is Radiohead is one step ahead of almost all of us, defining many of the rules. It's not easy to do - you have to combine forward-thinking tech understanding, solid knowledge of what your fans love about you, and an amazing sense of creativity and imagination.

So, are you against Radiohead for marketing themselves well? I'm not sure what your position is...but I personally say good for them.

Tom - I'm absolutely not against Radiohead. The point is I don't like their music much. But because of the way they behave I've grown to really like the idea of Radiohead. So much so that I give them a chance whenever they release something new. Sorry if that didn't come across in the video - I'm sure I said that when I presented it in person :-)

Iaintait: I enjoyed the video a lot. Well presented, excellent choices made throughout.

I do have some commentary on your relationship with Radiohead. First, a preface: preferences are preferences. I understand that. Especially when it comes to artistic things, and certainly music. Not everybody likes The Beatles or Led Zeppelin!

Calling Radiohead "self absorbed and depressing" clearly shows that you haven't taken the time to listen to their body of work, though. "Self absorbed and depressing" is EVERYBODY'S ~initial~ reaction to these guys.

On repeated listen, this band became (for me) the greatest group of any kind working today. Perhaps ever! And "depressing" was my initial reaction when I first heard them over a decade ago.

Their music is complicated, difficult to digest, and rewards those willing to look beyond first impressions. They do have a few depressing songs, but they don't craft just songs... they make flowing albums. And much like life, these albums have uplifting moments and sad moments. Life isn't simple, and Radiohead have reflected this in their work. Also, they have produced albums other than OK Computer and In Rainbows.

You can call that (and my explanation) self-absorbed if you'd like, but allow me to make a rebuttal in reference of your own fantastic presentation.

The reason why people generally think that Radiohead are a pretentious lot is because of two things. (besides a cursory glance at one or two of their "hits," i.e. Creep... a depressing song)

    A. How they present themselves in professionally-taken photographs. Which has nothing to do with the music.

    B. The fact that tens of thousands strive to make timeless music, and ultimately fail.

As you said in your video, Radiohead somehow makes things work. This does not only apply to their marketing for In Rainbows, but their records as well in the exact same fashion.

    They are the modern Beatles.

umm, all good art should be somewhat self-absorbed.

    who cares if its depressing.

but besides the point. nice presentation. ;)

I'm sure it's not what you've ment, but you make it sound like they're up for the money, and it's just not that way.

What's more, you turn idealism into just another way of making sales (that being the case or not).
I would gladly see the industry make more moves like Radiohead's, but I'm afraid it won't be for the right reasons. They'll keep not rewarding the artist, just making profit out of him in a different way.

Putting that aside, I'd add that, just speaking in marketing terms, Radiohead was only able to do all of this because they've got a trajectory of over 10 years of goddamn excellent music.

Oh, and I really liked you direction. Every presentation should be like yours.

I've talked about Radiohead a million times over the past year, but none of the conversations have come close to characterizing the band's creativity as this video. Thanks for sharing it.
