“Self Help”

“This piece displays $1000 worth of second-hand self-help books. They were all purchased at Thrift stores; which means they were owned, possibly read, and discarded. The titles pan by in a mechanical fashion, until at one point they reach a critical mass and begin to lose their composure. All of these books offer advice on how to be happy, love yourself, love others, be loved by others, make money, be successful, not be gay, raise your children, forgive your parents, lose weight, control your future, use your sadness, get over loss, work well with others, control others through intimidation, and become yourself. By showing the sheer magnitude of written opinions on how people feel others should live their lives, the absurd nature of the genre is revealed.” - Sage Vaughn, 2010
