music by Samuel Pellman
video by Miranda Raimondi
This piece was inspired by a composite of images from the Hubble, Spitzer, and Chandra space telescopes of the nebula 3C461 (also known as Cassiopeia A). The rhythms of the music and of the animated images have been determined by applying second-order Markov probabilities generated from recordings of brief improvisations by the composer. The pitches are tuned in a 5-limit just intonation and are sounded by physical modeling instruments developed for the Kyma by Harm Visser.
