So one day last year I was taping the old Metropolitan Hotel out in Asbury Park and as I was taping this cute little girl came in my frame. She was with her mother's friend who began to converse with me about the hotel. I plan to get some "after" shots of the hotel which is being demolished now.

I cut this fairly quickly last year in iMovie as a sketch and would like to give it a treatment in FCP. So its fairly rough here but if you can get over it and offer any suggestions or ideas you may have I would appreciate it.

Now the short format works for me but I've more footage on the town's ruins (which no longer exist as the town - once an amusement park - has become a haven for overpriced condos) I could easily add to this.

most resonant parts to me are the bits where the girl, joy, is standing almost completely in shadow, with the bright ruins around her

That's great! I like that you've included the conversation :-) Classic looking old building too. I hope the FCP treatment helps, as it's interesting footage.

I did notice a bit of shake that brought out some rolling shutter artifacts ;-) Have you tried shooting through the viewfinder? I've found that to work best for handheld on the HV20 because you're holding the camera tight to your face so your head then becomes the pivot making it more stable.

thanks Glenn. Yes I am getting better shots these days by holding the cam closer to my body or going through the view finder. this is one of my early footage when I first got the camera last year, & the first time ever shooting w/ a cam. can you imagine if it had been film? what an expensive disaster. lol

a lot of the shaky shots I want to get rid of - and I still need to go through the footage to get better selects of the hotel. Yet I just love when she runs towards the camera though - shakiness and all -it feels like a home movie and unplanned.

if there is one thing I hate about hv20 is w/out the Wide angle lens I have on there now it's extremely lightweight and (for me) fatal when I want a steady shot but i'm learning more and more. thanks for stopping by!

Was it something that I didn't say Maria?

I came to comment, and found you gone.
  • MariaNYC 3 months ago
why Mr. Keens I'm right here lol what do you mean you found me gone?

I followed the link in the e-mail and got the full video, then I started to write a comment. I went back to the video for a second look.

The thumbnail was there, but on pressing play the screen went black and displayed a message that the video did not exist. I got the same responce on my second and third attempts to view.

So, thinking that you had removed this video for some reason, I protested, and left. Not really, I thought I would return later.

With each viewing I see a different picture, but one thing remains constant, that is the complete difference between the portrayal of death between this and the trolly video.

The death of the building is tragic, possibly because of the use of monochrome. Then there is hope in the form of Joy (she with the infectious smile).

I'll try to get back on this one Maria, after more viewings.

Do you know that happens to me often and it's very strange. It must be a vimeo glitch but I thank you for being persistent enough to come back. I always appreciate your comments and the great observation as you have of this video. I'm glad you saw a bit of hope in there.

Unfortunately what is not mentioned in the video is the sad aftermath - the hotel fell victim to many scandals and corruption (this is an historical aspect of all Asbury Park). That's a documentary I 'd love to do.

I liked how it became more and more "concrete" as time passed. I first noticed this when the drums came in, and then, further, when the conversations began to bleed in. Visually, it changed less, however, my relationship to the images changed each time the sound changed.

There is obviously a lot of mystery to this kind of work (where am I, who is she, what happened here), and the stories of the older woman began to fill in the blanks a little bit, but not enough to take away the intrigue, they added to it, in fact.

A really polished sketch (IMO), which stands on it's own, I believe, so I'm excited to see you develop it further and see what happens next.

it could use some establishing shots - like where I am leaving from and where I 've arrived...I think a whole documentary on the town could be made and I thought of doing it on an experimental level, mostly from observing the changes throughout the redevelopment and gentrification process. I've collected some footage over the years (still images as well) which documents some of it but the many the story I've heard from the older towns people have not been taped. This is about the biggest documentary I could make on it LOL. but thanks Lenny, also great to hear from you. I hope to resume on this soon.

very well done, this is one of the most intriguing pieces i've seen on vimeo. i really like the style and the flavor of the film. that little girl is just adorable. i really enjoyed how the conversation seemed to ebb and flow with the music, really captivating. i particularly liked the beginning shots of movement along the road and then at the end as well. it seems like one drifted there for a short sojourn, as if in a dream, and then just moved on to some other place.

thank you - I'm so glad you got the intention!
