This is my first little video with a HV30. I used a twoneil diy 35mm adapter in a few shots, but I'm still trying to get used to it as you can probably tell. Edited in FCP and experimented with a bunch of different video filters from magic bullet looks. I've never made a movie before, let alone used FCP so any comments would be helpful! I forgot to switch the film to 30p for some shots, so it was filmed with a mix of 30p and 60i.

There was something about the backwards bits I didn't love - they felt a bit gimmicky - but it's pretty amazing that this is your first film!
I added you as a contact
Forgive me if I take this opportunity to critique the work as a whole. I only feel the desire to because I see that you've put a hellavu lot of work into this short, and that it has huge potential.
1. I think you should lose some of the special effects. I found the use of overlaying in general pretty unnecessary. You definitely want to keep it interesting, but I think in so many situations in editing, less is more. Look how much drama many films convey using only 'straight' cuts. I like some of the time-correction you've got in there, but overall I think there is a little too much sped up footage, and perhaps not enough slow. Your audience can see that he's going fast, and in some ways, speeding up the footage too often will make them more suspicious than excited/gripped.
2. What I call 'tightening' (as in thumb-screws). I know what it's like. You've invested a good deal of money, and a whole lot of time into capturing the precious footage (and a lot of what you have here IS precious, believe me). Just thinking about your clips makes you feel warm inside, and now the editing process is like disentangling yourself from a great-fling-that-you-know-can't-last. You have to be militant here. Think of a slick TV ad (don't you just hate them? - But they've got one thing down, and that's how to keep attention). Really try to slim down the selection (a little), and the duration (a little more) of the clips. One way to try to do this is through movement continuity editing (look for cut points that keep our focus moving constantly through the frame).
Seriously though, I really enjoyed you video. The footage conveys an amazing sense of space and speed. The static shots are sweet too. The music works very well to create a lush mood. You've really done some justice to pleasure of longboarding. You've made something great, my advice would be to go back and make it perfect.
Let me know if you do.
