I now have the answer!
I used a free "countdown" FinalCut plugin from Piero Fiorani for the timers.
You can find it here: web.mac.com/piero.fiorani/PieroF_FCE_Effect/Counter_Display.html
But since it is really a supposed to be used as a countdown (or up) timer, I couldn't find an easy way to freeze the value on the timers where needed. To do it, I made a small modification in the actual script to be able to set the Interval time to a much higher value, basically stopping the timer at the wanted keyframe.
