Griffin Powermate Grid (audio engine)
64 Griffin Powermates plugged into one Mac. Controlled with Processing.
Each knob can be turned to adjust its brightness as well as its corresponding sinewave tone. Noisy, sure. But entertaining nonetheless.

I had 21 4-port USB hubs that I daisy chained together to reduce it to 1 USB going into the computer. I then used Processing combined with a custom c /java wrapper written by a co-worker to talk to the Powermates. Each knob was identified by an index number and could send left and right turn events, press left and press right turn events, and push events. Processing could send back a number from 0 to 255 to control the brightness of the LED.
However, the library no longer works. It needs to be rewritten as it has stopped working with the intel chip Macs. One day I will get back to it. But I am in no hurry to tackle the tangled cord situation.
