Show you something what we as Vimeographers can do during our holidays: make a commercial for people who can't afford it and put it on Vimeo and YouTube! Can't tell you how satisfying this is to do and how happy and thankful they are!

SWAZI SECRETS is the range of natural oils and associated cosmetics produced by Swazi Indigenous Products, a community owned, not for profit Company set up to empower rural Swaziland women. The products are based on oil produced from the kernels of the marula, the King of African trees.

We visited as tourists the factory (March 2008) and offered the kind management a song and a commercial web clip. We worked it out and he brought us (with a 4wd into the bush in the far east of Swaziland to these very very poor but happy and so nice dressed rural woman) They get some Swazi $$ for picking and delivering the crushed nuts. I learned them this song. (Originally it is the Amarula song! Search Youtube on -AMARULA SONG- to see my 3 clips which I made in Namibia with kitchen personel singing it ) .

Some mailrespons from John Pearce he is the Executive Director. He sees his role as developing the Company and its product range before handing over to Swazi management.
-------------------
Hi Jan, It was really inspiring to meet with you yesterday and my mind has been buzzing with it since – thinking how we can get it used without even paying for TV advertising, ie getting the King to sing it at some events, that sort of thing.
-------------------- After seeing the clip:
Very, very many thanks - it's great. Everyone in the office is thrilled - we'll get it out to KaShoba for the women to see as soon as we can. We'll now set about getting links to it from our own and the various other Swazi Secrets websites. Many thanks also for the promo work on our behalf. The word is spreading......
----------------------Royal aprovement:
I had to go to see the Queen Mother (in the Palace of King Mswati III) so took along the video to show her - she was delighted with it so you can add royalty to your list of plaudits. Things are going very well here, especially with export sales.
Very best regards
John Pearce

lyrics:

I heard a Swazi Secret
I learned it from the trees
How nature has the answers
And we discovered these

There’s lots of Swazi Secrets
Marula is the best
So give your skin a real treat
And put it to the test

Find this lyric on the title page of Ken Kesey's Sometimes A Great Notion s’il vous plaît.

Sometimes I live in the country,
    Sometimes I live in the town;
Sometimes I get a great notion
To jump into the river . . . an' drown.

--From the song, "Good Night, Irene,"

I don't understand the youtube comparison. Vimeo for me is indeed a place where filmmakers share their work. Some show work that is purely visual, other have work that tries to tell a story (even some other commercial ones). Both are valid in my opinion. I even enjoyed watching the gold coast real estate videos on here. In the end it's a community based video site and we don't have to limit ourselves to content.

I'm not an expert on Vimeo, but this is what the Vimeo basics page says:
"Simply put, Vimeo is the home for videos you make. Use Vimeo to upload and share videos with anyone, watch great videos, meet new people, and explore the amazing world of personal video."

This is a personal video that Jan made - exactly what Vimeo states to be all about.
Whatever the content of the video might be, as long as it's personally made, I think it should be shared freely.

Personally - I love this Jan!
    Well done!
To spread knowledge about developing peoples is the sole reason I ever became interested in videography.
I can't think of a better way to spend your holidays.
    Keep up the good work!

    Jan,

This is a nice promotion of these dear ladies singing. It worked for me...simple... short and sweet. Over my 40 years in broadcasting I have seen many commercials and promos. I would not hold this up as a piece of artwork or creativity.

I will bet this business model is a cooperative project. I hope these ladies sell a bunch of it.

My only critique would be how to contact these folks... what website url can I go to and find more information about this product and those making it. So I guess it fails the this is a commercial test for me.

We have a channel for people to put up demo reels of their acting work.

There has been a lot of discussion at the Vimeo Roadmap regarding a Vimeo Plus account that is coming. Perhaps we now also need a Vimeo Plus Commerical site.

Thanks for taking the time to produce, shoot, edit, and post this... it would make an interesting segment in a documentary.

    Regards,

Hello Jan. I work for PBS and lived in Namibia for 14 years. At the time we tried to do a doc on Marula when the Body Shop was interested. Here at the local station in NM we have been testing HD 'prosumer' cams for web content, so thank you for all your thoughtful information on the subject. I am curious to know what camera is in the above photo of you, and curiouser as to the Dr. Zeuss-like mic extending? Thanks...!
