The life of a mariner is one given over to wanderlust—the quest for adventure, crossing unseen horizons to secure precious goods—only to bring them back to their home port. This same love of adventure and curiosity defines the brotherhood of Rick and Michael Mast. They share a fiercely independent spirit, leaping into the unknown and trusting that they’ll find the answer through endurance and dedication to their craft.

They began their voyage in their apartment, using a homemade machine to process cacao beans. Over time they cultivated their creation, sourcing beans from family farms in Madagascar, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, and Ecuador. Each bar is handmade with incredible reverence for the process and history of chocolate. They are bound in ornamental papers and golden foil like a collection of rare books. Each bar offers its own story of flavors, and no two are exactly alike.

The Mast Brothers are now planning to navigate the mighty Atlantic, sailing to the Dominican Republic in search of beans and a deeper connection with the folks who grow them. Before they begin the next chapter, The Scout spent time with Rick and Michael documenting their story. Photo by Mindy Best.

Such a beautiful video and story. I truly appreciate their dedication to not only their craft, but to craft in general. I love the look of their shop, the fact that they hand wrap each bar with beautiful papers, and most importantly, their beards.

Thank you so much for sharing this!

These two brothers ideals about craftsmanship and "Artisan" craft is amazing.. I have to hand it to them for speaking about these ideals that hit home on so many levels.... These are the bricks of what great things are built on in life.. I am smiling from ear to ear after hearing their own words.. They are so passionate about their Ideals. 5 stars!

Everything about this is amazing, fantastic story, great people, beatifully shot... Now how do I get my hands on some of that chocolate?

What was this shot on? Color graded with? It really looks great.
  • Brennan Stasiewicz plus 1 year ago
Man, I have to tell you... Thank you for the compliment but I am a horrible color grader. And the low-res file really brings out the flaws. The one regret I have is that this would have really benefited from a pro. Color grading is a definite skill that I'm behind on.

Or maybe I've just watched the footage too many times and I'm numb? Fortunately, Ed knows his EX cams. This was shot on EX1 and EX3, both running Letus adapters.

This is by far my favorite one. Not just because of it's energy and message, but because I clearly love Chocolate. Go buy some Mast Brothers. you will not be disappointed.
  • D.M Hughes 1 year ago
Well I'm no professional, but I've watch many fine films, and I've seen plenty of great stuff on Vimeo... I think you're being too hard on your skills.. Can't wait to see your next project. I think testing out their Chocolate will have to wait til I'm back in NY... $92 for 10 bars is hard for me to justify no matter how good it is.

    Cheers!

Hey man, thanks for the cheer! You speak better English than I speak Korean! But I do love me some ttuckpokki.

Good luck with your endeavor. The best thing to remember is that everyone has a story even if they don't know it. and that story can be as epic as you want it to be.

i'm going to check out your site now. take care. b.
  • mosaicist.net plus 1 year ago
    Hi I'm director of mosaicist.net
I'm really shy to see my video after yours, haha.
    I sympathize with your comment.
Our web-site's purpose is just like that.

    Everyone has a story,
despite many people don't recognize from them.
We want to point them and record them
and give them a chance to say there story.
It'll not only be a great chace to the interviewees,
but also to the listeners and the people
    who watch our interviews.
Although a person saying in the video is still a
young boy who works at a seven-eleven for a part job,
We believe he could give us big touch and lesson.

    Sorry for 'too long' comment.
I'm really glad to see your video
and impressed with nice camera movings.
Every clips in the video looks so beautiful.

Most of all I'm very happy to meet a person
who think extremely similar to myself.

    It's distance is quite far,
Someday I really want to interview you.
And before that ofcourse I really want to be in your video fisrt haha :)

    Good luck to your job.

  • Steve Weiss plus 1 year ago
Very well done. I, more then anyone know how hard it is to work with non-talent to create essentially a corporate video that has the feel of a film. I spent 20 years doing it and I've made over 500 of these, several very similar to yours like this, i.e. vimeo.com/7242177 from 1994.

To the point, you've done everything right here. Taking the old craftsman approach is great because it takes you out of the sales pitch and let's you have the beautiful warm lighting that you so wonderfully did. I love the ships and adventure theme. The bookended tracking in and out shot of the two men proudly standing with the ship in the middle. Thank you for the ECU shots, I am not seeing those in peoples work these days. Love the music changes and especially the black reflection/subject change holes. This was masterfully done and is an excellent video for the Mast Bros. company. Essentially these guys make candy bars, much like I make camera accessories but you turned it into an adventure of age old craftmanship. One of the best of this genre' I've seen. Well done.
    Steve
