Small *STYROFOAM* Skyfun jet (34" Wingspan) flying in and around a Wind turbine. The blades were moving a LOT faster than I thought initially. A close call, I think the antenna is shorter now.

This was flown FPV (First Person View). The live image is transmitted to the ground for viewing through video goggles worn by the pilot.

"A close call, I think the antenna is shorter now"

Only solution to that is to change to 2.4 GHz with very short antennas. ;-)

    Cool flying, dude!
  • aaron_gx 1 year ago
NOOOOOOO 2.4 is the curse!!!! For FPV flying anyways. ;)

Not if you use something else for video downlink. ;-)

Some really nice flying there for sure . You set up your angle of attacks just right for those passes and even in your landing . Some nice barrel roll's too ! very nice..WTG on the 600 views.

    Cloud Sky?
    Seemed really snappy in rolls.

NICE video I might add too...
  • aaron_gx 1 year ago
No, I have a Clouds Fly, but this is a Skyfun - Hobbyking FunJet. Its a delta-wing type plane. Fast & snappy!

I don't think I have the "stones" for flying like this. Great job on an exciting video. Hope the landing wasn't to rough on the plane! - Rob

it was a blast. the landing did nothing more than dent the groundstation case :)

I can see the upcoming headline. "He flew a toy jet into a wind turbine and broke the blade, doing roughly $20,000 worth of damage. Luckily, he posted a video, so we were able to arrest him."
  • aaron_gx 1 year ago
haha... :) not the first buzz-kill comment... Not the last.

BTW, if I broke a blade, I'd turn MYSELF in.

These turbines cost tens of millions of dollars apiece. They were built to provide electricity for a nation that's in thrall to Middle-East oil exporters, and to replace the filthy crude oil that lately fouled the Gulf of Mexico (remember that?).

I ONLY HOPE THAT THE AUTHORITIES FIND THE SELF-INDULGENT, RECKLESS MORON WHO POSTED THIS VIDEO AND PROSECUTE HIM.
  • aaron_gx 1 year ago
Good one! These ones cost only $1.5 million. If the authorities find me, they'll need to prosecute me FOR something!

Sounds like you're the kinda person that has a lot to say, with nothing to do. Go talk politics elsewhere.

    gotta love the haters Aaron
have you been flying any lately?
  • aaron_gx 11 months ago
no... not at all! Last time i flew, was mountain meadows where you totaled your radian, and i almost flew into the side of the coulee.... :) Gotta get out there. Got your stryker built yet?

I work on wind turbines for a living and there is no possible way for that little foam airplane to damage a blade on one. The blades are built to withstand large bird strikes, hail storms etc. I have personally witnessed testing in which a 25 lbs steel weight was dropped into a turbine blade spinning at max allowable rpm. It put a ding in the leading edge that was purely cosmetic, no repair was required.

Thank you for the info!!! :) I know they must over-engineer products like these if they are to last more than 10 years in service.
